Why doctors are decrying Tennessee's 'dangerous' abortion ban as lawmakers debate change

Dr. Michael DeRoche’s patient was already a mother to four when her fifth pregnancy went wrong.

The patient’s embryo implanted in her cesarean section scar, a form of ectopic pregnancy that is rarely viable and can cause life-threatening complications, including severe hemorrhage and death.

-snip-

DeRoche, formerly a Franklin-based maternal fetal medicine specialist who now consults on high-risk pregnancies across Tennessee, knew what was needed — termination of the ectopic pregnancy.

But under Tennessee’s total abortion ban, which requires physicians to knowingly commit a felony when performing an abortion to prevent the death or severe injury of a pregnant patient, hospitals and physicians are wary of making what were once routine, if heartbreaking, decisions.

So much better to let ignorant and incompetent legislators decide the best treatment for everyone.

Those were the most difficult and time-consuming courses I ever took. I kept Gray's Anatomy propped open in my dining room and memorized a page every time I passed. And that was not the only textbook, just the basic foundation of what else I had to learn! We had to dissect a few small body parts; doctors have to dissect whole human bodies and PROVE that they can understand how every tiny part works and perform surgical procedures on all of them. And doctors take MANY such courses for 4, 6, 8, or 10 years, practicing under the watchful eyes of more senior doctors as they earn the right to practice their specialities! And they KEEP taking short courses and seminars all their lives! And they judge each other and teach each other and guide each other all their lives! And they stay careful and steady and sympathetic while managing and living through countless medical emergencies and tragedies. These fundamentalists have NO IDEA of the complexities of biology, embryology, heredity, genetics, disease, or the human body! Doctors are the people who should be making these decisions!

I saw no dissenting comments. I'm sure, further down, there are Xtianists and men making their opinions known, but at least the first couple of scrolls proved what we know -- these laws are NOT what the people want.

I've made outlandish propositions regarding this... boys having vasectomies until they come of age, are married, and it's agreed by the wife to be reversed.

Every female in the U.S. having their tubes tied. No abortion. No more babies. Period. End of story. (And then they'll outlaw that!)

But I do wonder... we DO still have laws in this country that could work for us, if we could get someone with money to work with us. The politicians and the RTL and the evangelicals are acting as defacto medical doctors -- ob/gyns. Without certification, without training, without licensing. IOW, their *impersonating* doctors.

While the real doctors in these states stand back out of fear of going prison, or losing their practice altogether because they can no longer get malpractice insurance, why don't we turn that around on these politicians -- federal AND state.

Each politician who has voted *and* advocated for no abortion - to strip reproductive healthcare from women and deny our rights as humans - *must* carry malpractice insurance. At that point, any pregnancy that ends badly, any woman who comes near death, or any woman who dies because of the politicians and the extremists must necessarily appear before a medical board who defend themselves, malpractice insurance on the table in front of them.

These people don't give a crap whether women live or die, in fact, THESE people WANT us to die. Any words of reason, of logic, flies over their head - not because they don't already know them - but because they refuse to count them as important because it's "just a woman."

But one thing these people care more about than anything else in the world is *money*... it may be heartrending at the time, but people have got to start hitting these people in the pocketbooks. And hard. They have DeVos and Koch money behind them. They want to control the United States (if they stop there!). They want the world on THEIR terms only. The only question is are we going to let them and how are we going to fight back.

Obviously, for women like me who've been through this 50 years ago, it's a whole new ballgame. What worked then won't work now. I have no doubt they'll just shoot us now. But $$$$ is the way to hurt these people. And as for the extremists, get the $$$$ out of their Church and away from their preachers. Let's have them sell off a few of those "jets for the Lord" their so proud of. The question is women like me... ordinary, retired or not, women have no power and no one in power really standing up for us. Even the Rep in Nebraska has a good point of filibustering everything because the anti-trans bill would hurt the kids. That's something someone in power is doing. What about us???? Who in power is standing up and putting their money into US?
