Hate crimes jumped nearly 12% in 2021, new FBI figures show

https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/justice-department/hate-crimes-jumped-nearly-12-2021-new-fbi-figures-show-rcna747814

Hate crimes in the U.S. increased by 11.6% in 2021 from the previous year, according to revised figures the FBI released Monday.

The statistics showed that 12,411 people were reported to have been victims of hate crimes in 2021, 64.5% of them targeted because of their race or ethnicity, 15.9% targeted for their sexual orientation and 14.1% for their religion. The reports were up from 8,120 in 2020 to 9,065 in 2021 — some crimes had multiple victims.

In 2020, reports of hate crimes increased by less than 3% from the previous year.

That webpage presents some of it. For the full report that drips all kinds of other info click on "Supplemental Hate Crime Statistics, 2021". For offender race/ethnicity in detail/by offense, Table 3A on page 11; for offender race/ethnicity summary, Table 9A on page 19. Some groups are overrepresented, some under represented.

Some states (page 21) are really overrepresented (Calif. beats #2 by a 1000, and #2 is New York, with Jersey a close #3 and Texas a ways back at #4. (CA has 39 million v Tx 30 million population, but is almost 3x ahead in hate crimes reported.)

I'm usually surprised when I look at the stats, even making extreme assumptions about how to distribute the numbers for "unknown".
