A Florida Republican seeking to restrict sex education for students confirmed in a committee hearing on Wednesday that his bill would also ban young girls from discussing their menstrual cycles with school officials.
Rep. Stan McClains (R) proposed legislation, House Bill 1069, seeks to restrict the educational materials used in state schools, which critics have likened to book banning. The bill requires course material and instruction on sexually transmitted diseases, health education or material on human sexuality to only occur in grades 6 through 12, according to the legislation.
During a Wednesday House Education Quality Subcommittee, Rep. Ashley Viola Gantt (D) asked McClain if this bill would prohibit girls younger than 6th grade from discussing their periods in school.
Does this bill prohibit conversations about menstrual cycles ― because we know that typically the ages is between 10 and 15 ― so if little girls experience their menstrual cycle in fifth grade or fourth grade, will that prohibit conversations from them since they are in the grade lower than sixth grade? Gantt asked McClain during the committee hearing.

I remember when I was in 5th grade they took the girls from the class and gave them instruction that they would soon reach puberty and have to deal with menstruation. This was way back in 1968.

I had a client family once who wanted their 14 yr old daughter to only use the phone 10 min/day.
That didn't work out so well.

I had to teach sex ed to my 6th graders for two years. I was terrified so the school nurse did it with me the first year. The girls and boys were separated and I had the girls. One of the things we did was pass out pieces of paper each day and they could anonymously ask an appropriate question. I would take them home to read them ahead of time so I was able to give them the right answers. The question about getting pregnant by a dog was not appropriate so I left it alone.
The best part of teaching about puberty in 6th grade is that they learn to use deodorant! We gave free samples since there were 37 students crammed in a single classroom and they smelled a lot after PE and recess.

She also showed us all where Barbie would have her baby later on. Rather incomplete information, but for a 6 year old with older sisters, she wasn't totally wrong.
This would have been in 1966.
