A contentious six-week abortion ban in Florida made it through its first committee hearing early on Thursday, in a party-line vote of 13-5, which came after about more than 150 testimonies from people who traveled to the Capitol. The meeting ended with heartache.
Abortion rights advocates, medical personnel and other citizens stepped in and out of the committee room in a revolving door of emotion, consoling one another.
The committee room was composed of advocates from both sides, though largely with women who shared their most personal testaments some for the first time. One woman directly addressed the lawmakers, the men then the women, as some idly sat with heads hung down and attention spans short.
Three amendments were proposed by House Democrats, including one to remove the requirement of a second physician sign-off all of them failed. In closing arguments, the Democrats conceded to not being able to change their Republican colleagues minds but pleaded that they consider amendments moving forward.

(58,785 posts)The Department of Agriculture, which administers the national school lunch program, last month announced that it would impose new guidelines over the next several years that will further limit sodium, emphasize whole grains and restrict sugar. Efforts to tighten nutritional standards, though, have met with resistance from some Republican lawmakers and from industry groups.
Those who care speak out AND vote Democratic.
Other processed foods are sold by school cafeterias. Of course, it's the parents' responsibility to decide what their children will eat. Our grandkids broke their mother, though, who until they entered school had made virtually everything from scratch with carefully vetted ingredients. Kids should only be able to obtain healthy foods at school.

(3,480 posts)This is what the people in Florida want, overwhelmingly. Tears and anger dont mean a damn thing, winning elections does.
DeSantis won in a landslide. They want what hes doing. The GOP has more than twice the amount of state Senators and Reps as the Democrats have. Floridians want what theyre doing.

(8,222 posts)nearly half the state didn't even bother to show up and vote 😒 ...and that's on top of the built-in disadvantage of gerrymandering.
It's very frustrating.

Or, as I prefer to say, If you think abortion is wrong, don't have one.

(25,811 posts)I am long past the age of potential pregnancy, since I'm now 74. But in the very distant past I could envision various scenarios in which I would have an abortion, and others in which I would not. They always involved very personal circumstances and decisions. What enrages me is those who think THEIR point of view is the only one, their decisions the only correct one. How did they get to be so narrow minded?
