He keeps doing this
By Conover Kennard March 17, 2023
The Putin wing of the GOP is in the minority. A new poll from Gallup shows diminishing support for Russia in the U.S., dropping from 15% holding a favorable view to 9%. And 68% in the U.S. view Ukraine favorably.
Well, yeah. Of course. As it happens, aggressively invading a country while bombing hospitals and maternity rooms while raping women and children isn't popular. Oh, and Russia has kidnapped countless numbers of Ukrainian children, too.
But if you're Donald Trump, Russia is super cool and not a threat. And his Vladykins is an alpha male!

"The greatest threat to western civilization today is not Russia; it's probably more than anything else, ourselves, and some of the horrible USA-hating people that represent us," he said.

The man is an out and out Russian asset, is actively giving out Soviet era anti NATO talking points, and
is rooting for the brutal Russian war on the people of Ukraine.

McGonigal is accused of taking money from a sanctioned Russian oligarch.

The criminal case against former FBI agent Charles McGonigal will include classified information along with electronic communications, financial records and surveillance photos, a prosecutor said Thursday during a court hearing.
McGonigal, who has pleaded not guilty to charges over his ties to sanctioned Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska, appeared next to his attorney and a co-defendant and said nothing.
Prosecutors disclosed the types of evidence they expected to use and the judge instructed the two sides to work on a protective order to make sure nothing classified is disclosed.

(70,482 posts)McGonigal was being paid Oleg Deripaska and now via a family member Oleg Deripaska
has been funding Tony DeVolder (aka George Santos). DeVolder is just like Trump in that
he is a Russia paid for chaos agent.
Bill Barr dropped the indictments from Mueller on Oleg Deripaska.

(101,295 posts)It's "ourselves"; that, by definition, includes him. It doesn't have to include the USA. "The horrible USA-hating people that represent us" doesn't have to mean the president; it could, for instance, mean DeSantis, the governor who represents Trump in his home state (he voted there in 2020). I don't know who his House rep is, but both his senators are Republican.
OK, he wanted it to mean Democrats; but because he's an idiot, he phrased it like an admission,

(8,964 posts)First in line to embrace Putin-style authoritarianism and military expansion into sovereign territory, and to further the spread of both. Being an apologist for a brutal dictator and war criminal is not borne out of any ideological stance. With any and all things Trump, it is purely transactional. It is connected to what he has already received, or hopes to get, hopes to become, or hopes to conceal. Slogans and phony gestures such as hugging the flag, not to mention "America First" policy positions that would effectively weaken national security and long-held alliances, comprise a carefully-crafted manipulation of reality. The intended audience of flag-waving "patriots" eats it up, and in the process readily absorbs the grievance messaging that their freedoms and positions in American society are being threatened from within. As with Germany in the 1930's, emerging scapegoats, marginalized groups, and "solutions to problems" are center-stage. The messaging is simple, and effective. Trump himself once remarked with uncommon candor that he "loved the poorly educated". And there's a reason for that perverse self-serving association. Keeping people in a tightly controlled information bubble, ignorant and afraid of the boogeymen who are perceived as threatening their very existence, provides a strongman with control over those subjects.

(10,826 posts)I find this love and admiration of all things Putin astonishing and disgusting. Detente was fine, a good thing pulling us back from a nuclear Armageddon. But the idea these Russian-leaning Republicans would put American national security and Western values behind a gangster regime is shocking and inexplicable.
All in the service of a small, petty man who has despot envy!
I will never understand it nor will I understand the Americans cheering for the demise of our American Republic.
The America First (fascist) Movement was dangerous in the 30's and 40's. It's dangerous now, perhaps more so with the 24/7 propaganda channels flooding the zone with disinformation.

They have no concept that we live in a global community now. Where the fates of one country can affect another. Ukraine produces a large amount of the world's wheat. can you fathom the impact to our national interests if Russia has control of that much of the food supply?
