When you're at risk, you learn to read danger signs, and also, if the dominant perspective is everywhere in movies and books and media, you grow up with that perspective.

You learn what their different ways of looking at you mean, down to the smallest of facial tics, their different smiles and what they mean, being able to tell by the sound of their voice what they are about to do. The list goes on and on.

You learn what placates them, what angers them, what makes them happy and you learn to control your behavior and responses to prevent one or encourage the other.

You learn their vanities and what passes as respect to them.

You learn them inside out, so you can survive another day.
