If Twitter use went down by another 50%, Twitter itself would go down. And if Twitter goes down, it won't be that long before some other way to share info online rises to replace it: nature abhors a vacuum and all of that.
From now on I'm going to cut back significantly clicking on threads that link to Twitter posts here. Yes, I will still do so when the content is of exceptional importance, or when it contains significant content unavailable anywhere else. But I can do without reading most Twitter posts, no matter how insightful or funny they may be, And if important breaking news is coming across Twitter it will soon be talked about everywhere.
Yeah, sometimes I won't know what I'm getting into before I open an OP, but I can always cut my losses and move on without commenting and bumping a Twitter thread.
I just can't stand Elon Musk and want as little to do with supporting his personal platform now as I possibly can.

(22,911 posts)If that became commonplace here a whole lot less Twitter threads would get posted. What's the point in posting a thread if few bother to read or comment on it? I wish people would relate to Twitter as a right wing platform here, and acknowledge in an OP header when it is being linked to anyway, because there are no alternative sources for available the content.

(51,308 posts)I have no one on ignore, but I never click on their threads.
I can only assume they sit at the computer all day long. It boggles the mind.

(51,308 posts)Alas, I guess I'll never know because I've not the least interest.

(46,773 posts)I saw the subject line and chose to just move on. I rarely click on anything from Twitter.

(22,284 posts)for security reasons, it is not a good idea to click on links unless you know what they are.

(46,016 posts)So, unless the tweet is copied here, I usually back out when I see a link to a tweet.

Hence I do not participate in a forum run by Musk, except as a saboteur.

(7,611 posts)For breaking news about Ukraine
When will the msm get around to covering the drone strike in Ctimea yesterday?
It is what it is. I intend to keep well-informed about Ukraine and will post from Twitter if I think it is important.

(22,911 posts)Increasingly, information on Ukraine is my primary reason for reading anything on Twitter. But that makes up a very small percentage of the Twitter content I see on DU. Twitter doesn't have to lose 80% of it's users to fail. Probably 25 or so percent would be more than sufficient. Meanwhile, as users continue to steer away from Twitter, commercial incentives will increase for something else to replace it.

(7,611 posts)Of their very good coverage of Ukraine on Twitter and the articles don't have a paywall. There was a great article on Ukraine winning the was against their electrical Infratructure just today.

(51,308 posts)Imo, much better sources and less likely to be false.
But I'm not a fan of twitter or Musk.

(2,866 posts)And this does not only go for Twitter as pay walls hit and other crap I don't need to have to click around. If the concern is attribution, which is fair, add the attribution to the original author/source in the summary.

(36,221 posts)it plays the the video here on DU & other times it takes you to twitter to play it. There must be a diff in the way the link was posted. ???

(50,477 posts)I rather go directly to the source.

(32,328 posts)I bothers me that we're giving clicks to Twitter that they didn't earn and they don't deserve.
To me the way around it is for the original DU poster to make a jpeg image or screenshot of the tweet, and then post the screenshot. It's no longer "live" because our DU readers can see what it says but they can't click on the Tweet.
I really wish more DU posters would do that.
Pobeka
(4,999 posts)I click on average about one tweet a day.
There are posters now looking for news items on mastedon, and I am grateful to them. Applegrove is one who comes to mind who has started scanning mastedon for news and posting links here on DU.

(63,083 posts)9 times out of 10, the poster is simply retweeting someone elses statement without adding to it.
Confine them to a single group so that they can be more readily ignored.
