Iowa House Democrats unveil reproductive rights bills; GOP majority will block them
House Democrats on Monday introduced a package of bills to protect the right to an abortion and increase access to birth control and maternal care in Iowa.
But Democratic leaders acknowledged the bills have little hope of passing not with Republicans controlling the House, Senate and governor's office and a key legislative deadline already come and gone.
"We want to be proactive about making sure that these things are part of the conversation," said House Minority Leader Jennifer Konfrst. "If nothing else, if they don't pass, if these things don't happen, it will be a loud and clear message to Iowans that House Democrats stand with the majority and the House Republicans don't."
Gov. Kim Reynolds and Republican leaders in the Iowa House and Senate are interested in further restricting abortion in Iowa. But GOP leaders have said they're not planning to pass any new legislation on the issue until the Iowa Supreme Court reconsiders a 2018 law that would prohibit most abortions after six weeks of pregnancy.
