Popular Conservative Blog Slams President Obama’s ‘Liverish Lips’ On Newsweek Cover

Happy MLK Day from the conservative movement!

Glenn Reynolds of the popular conservative blog Instapundit (home of the “Instalanche,” the nickname given to the huge amounts of traffic an Instapundit link can drive) made an unfortunate observation about the Newsweek cover that has so many conservative bloggers in a lather. Rather than focus on Andrew Sullivan‘s titular question “Why are Obama’s critics so dumb,” Reynolds picks on the cover photo, and the President’s “liverish lips.”

From Instapundit:

IN WALKS THE VILLAGE IDIOT, AND HIS FACE IS ALL AGLOW. He’s been up all night listening to Obama’s radio.
But the Obama photo on Newsweek’s cover will do him more harm than all the desparate sycophancy in the text. He looks terrible, and surprisingly like Jimmy Carter, even down to the downturned liverish lips and incipient jowls. I’m amazed they went with that one. Perhaps the staff is of two minds. Andrew Sullivan, of course, has reason for gratitude.

Although I’m not a frequent Insty reader, I’ve never known Glenn Reynolds to exhibit any racist tendencies, so I’m going to give him the benefit of the doubt that he didn’t know “liver-lips” is a deep-dish racial slur.

Even so, given all that’s going on in this country, it’s more than a little bit strange that Reynolds has chosen to fixate on President Obama’s lips.

for what racist epithet 'liver' makes a great stand-in.

Remember the backwoods skit with this twangy song:

"I hate liver, liver makes me quiver.
Liver makes me curl right up and die (makes me cry)
Liver liver liver liver liver liver liver liver ..."

The words there are descriptive of features of Jimmy Carter.

If I said "You look like Kermit the Frog, right down to the ping pong ball eyes," the phrase "ping long ball eyes" is a feature of Kemit's which I am comparing to you.

Or saying "these two people have these features in common."

Either someone failed reading comprehension, or I completely missed that Carter wasn't white.

Whatever that's supposed to mean.

Again, I'm sure Reynolds is otherwise a fine example of a conservative douchebag but not only is the term "liver lips" not a racial slur, he doesn't use it as a racial slur.

While it could be used as a dog whistle slur for "n****r lips", I couldn't find many examples that use. "Liverlips" was a staple insult of comedians decades ago and had no racial connotations, whatsoever. I think (it's been a while) this was one of Milton Berle's oft-repeated insults. Possibly Tim Conway as well.

I think everyone here needs to rent and watch more Milton Berle movies, is what I'm saying. Or at least "It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World!"

But no, that's not a racial slur.

I've seen it used here many, many times. Search with Google, see for yourself.
