(17,305 posts)Central Florida have to say to their governor. Half of Orange county would be on unemployment compensation in one week.

(53,342 posts)Many barely survived the furlough months in 2020
And FL unemployment is one of the worst in the nation in multiple ways:
1) antiquated and buggy system
2) limited amount of UI per week
3) very short payout period til funds dry up per person

(2,138 posts)Back in the 60s/early 70s the US Navy had an image problem. Even in cities with major ports sailors in uniform were rarely welcome past the cluster of bars, tattoo parlors, and pawnshops that planted themselves just outside the main gate. Some stores even had signs that said "Dogs and Sailors Not Allowed".
Norfolk Naval Base got a new commanding officer. He reached out to the city council in a friendly gesture and asked what could be done to improve relations.
He was basically told to pound sand. Not only did the council not care about improving relations, they told the CO that the Navy was lucky that the city of Norfolk even allowed the base to be there, since all it did was duck up resources that could be better deployed elsewhere.
The officer politely thanked them for their time and went back to his office. He then drafted a new standing order: for the next 30 days, the base would be on lockdown. No military personnel could go into town. If someone lived off-base, they were allowed to travel there and back as long as they didn't make any stops along the way.
Within two weeks the town council was begging the CO to lift the lockdown. Businesses were having trouble making ends meet without all of the dollars the sailors would usually spend in town.
They were more than willing to discuss ways to make the Navy feel more welcome in Norfolk.

(143,999 posts)An idiot in the Floridia legis has filed a bill to void the Development Agreement and restrictive covenants adopted by Reedy Creek and Disney. This bill is clearly void due to the impairment of contract clauses in both the US and Florida constitutions. This will be a fun fight to watch.

That clause prohibits government actions to impair an existing contract, said Jake Schumer, a municipal attorney in the suburban Orlando law firm of Shepard, Smith, Kohlmyer & Hand.....
By attempting to repeal those covenants, the amendment is a clear violation of the contracts clause, Schumer argued. It would be a major change in the law for the bill to be held up as to the application to that agreement. Florida statute does not authorize this state on its own to modify or revoke a development agreement, said Michael Wolf, a professor of local government and property law at the University of Florida....
Wolf also said that the measure could also be invalidated by the court because it attempts to retroactively apply to the Disney agreements. In 1999 the Florida Supreme Court ruled in Metro-Dade County v. Chase Fed. Hous. Corp. that generally due process considerations prevent the State from retroactively abolishing vested rights.
Disney will have fun fighting any attempt to void the agreements that DeathSantis is mad at
