Migrants are coming here because there's work for them. Plenty of work in agriculture and meat packing especially. They're being lured here by employers.
Hatred of migrant workers is being used politically by the Republicans to win favor with White working class voters, but notice not a one of them are calling for criminal sanctions against employers who hire these migrants. Not a one.
I just want one journalist to ask a Republican if they want to criminally charge employers and sanction them for hiring migrants. Instead of pandering to the Republican base. Do your job as journalists and ask them this question.
This country runs on undocumented, migrant workers. Without them, our economy would collapse. There would literally not be any food on the shelves at the grocery store. The entire travel and leisure industry would collapse.

Everyone benefits.
Get everyone legal... no more abusing bosses refusing to pay or threatening to call the authorities.

(35,427 posts)This is pure right wing psy ops. Republicans manipulate xenophobia and hate across multiple groups for votes. Yet, do nothing about the actual reason why undocumented migrants come here. They come here to work. They come here because there are tons of jobs available for them. They come here because employers don't want to pay minimum wage.
Employers are so desperate for labor that they're hiring children.

(115,656 posts)It went into effect right after WWII and ended in 1964 - it was an agreement with the Mexican government that allowed Mexican men to work legally on farms under temporary contracts. But the working conditions were so terrible that it ended after years of protests by activists like Cesar Chavez. To try to deal with the labor shortage that resulted, the government tried to replace the workers with American high school boys. The working conditions were still terrible and the program failed.

(115,656 posts)Not to mention restaurant workers and hotel maids. You're right; the economy would collapse, and things would be much more expensive - a lot of immigrants get paid under the table, below minimum wage, and without benefits. If the GOP wants to stop immigration they should focus on the employers, but they won't because hiring undocumented immigrants who can be exploited is good for business.

(18,539 posts)Contrary to the many threads of "why would anyone want to come to the US" and those who would like to leave because it is so awful here, thousands do want to come here daily.
More than a few are from countries that people here would like to move to...
