Last night we watched Victor/Victoria with Julie Andrews, James Garner and Robert Preston

After reading about all the anti LGBTQ laws going on in Florida and other red states I can’t help but think this movie would be banned. It was made in1982 and I remember seeing it then and enjoying it. My husband had never seen it and we talked about how this movie couldn’t have even been made now. Men dressing as a woman and a woman dressing like a man and a woman pretending to be a gay man who is a drag queen. I read Peter Sellers was supposed to have the Robert Preston role

Blake Edwards was a genius.

1. Even then, some things were changed for sensitivity... in the play vs the movie...

In the movie, King Marchand witnesses Victoria bathe and realizes she is a woman, and then makes his move to kiss and seduce her - in the play he has no such direct knowledge and follows his heart.

2. "A woman....pretending to be a man.... pretending to be a woman."

One of my absolute favorite movies.

3. Former Detroit Lion Alex Karras

Was a hoot in that film. As was the brilliant Lesley Ann Warren.

4. I love this movie!

Now I want to watch it again!

DeSantis and the homophobes would go absolutely apoplectic over it.

5. The original was made in Germany in 1933

Viktor Victoria before the complete take over of the film industry by nazis. Basically the same story.

9. I have this movie on DVD and love it.

When I loan it out I sometimes have trouble getting it back because they want to watch it just one more time, etc. It's so witty. The music is fun and I adore James Garner and Julie Andrews together, not to mention Robert Preston.

10. Never saw it. Not specifically because of the obvious gender fluidity of it,

just never deeply interested me beyond a passing interest, I guess. Always was intrigued, and have heard many great comments about it.

But then, I'm not much of a movie-goer, especially over the last 20 years or so.

11. and it had a PG rating

this was before the PG13 was created in the mid 1980's. Now it might well cause boycotts at theaters. Now you did have to suspend disbelief that Julie Andrews would audition and not get a singing job but amazing film.
