Prosecutors issued the subpoena shortly after asking a Trump aide before a federal grand jury about the audio recording of a July 2021 meeting at Trumps golf course in Bedminster, New Jersey. On the recording, Trump acknowledges he held onto a classified Pentagon document about a potential attack on Iran.
Prosecutors sought any and all documents and materials related to Mark Milley, Trumps chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Iran, including maps or invasion plans, the sources say. A similar subpoena was sent to at least one other attendee of the meeting, another source tells CNN.
The sources say prosecutors made clear to Trumps attorneys after issuing the subpoena that they specifically wanted the Iran document he talked about on tape as well as any material referencing classified information like meeting notes, audio recordings or copies of the document that may still be Trumps possession.
The fact that Trumps team was unable to produce the document underscores the challenges the government has faced in trying to recover classified material that Trump took when he left the White House and in understanding the movement of government records that Trump kept.

(21,426 posts)Trump was responding to reports that General Milley had worked hard to prevent Trump from attacking Iran in the last few weeks of his term.
Trump tried to turn that story around and claim that it was Milley who wanted to invade Iran and that Trump had stopped him. Then Trumped claimed that he had a classified document that could prove that Milley had drawn up such a plan, but, unfortinately, Trump could not show it to anyone because it was classified.
Claiming that he could not show the document because it was classified was just Trump covering up his lie about Milley being the one who wanted to invade Iran. If anyone had actually looked at the paper that Trump rattled around, they would probably have seen that it was blank or that it was just some random letter or advertisement that he had received.
It was all a lie - that Milley wanted to invade Iran and that Trump has a classified document to prove it.

So this recording about the Iran document - do we know when it was made? Is it possible that that the document 'disappeared'
right around the time Ivanna died?
I know it's a bizarre thought, but her burial on the grounds of Bedminster just doesn't make sense w/ out something like this being tied to it. And I have a feeling that she'll be seeing the sun again.

Shortly after learning that former President Donald J. Trump had been recorded discussing what appeared to be classified material describing military options for confronting Iran, federal prosecutors issued a subpoena to his lawyers seeking the return of all records that resembled the document he mentioned, two people familiar with the matter said on Friday. But Mr. Trumps legal team has informed the Justice Department that it was unable to find any such records in his possession, the people said.
.....I suppose we shouldnt also discount the possibility that Trump deceived his own defense attorneys and hid the document in question so they couldnt return it in response to the subpoena in March......
The recording itself is a key piece of evidence. Trump has insisted that he declassified what he took, and by all accounts, this tape goes a long way toward discrediting this defense. As a Washington Post report summarized this week, the recording suggested the former president understood both the legal and security concerns around his possession of such restricted information.
But if Trump and his team also cant produce the document in question, that makes a bad situation worse
