16. Virginia Civil War Museum New Market, VA

Stayed across the interstate from this place years ago for a trip my family made to visit Skyline Dr. I didn't really want to go there but my kid likes Civil War stuff so we paid the admission price and I held my nose (the folks running the place were nice).

Was walking through the place going over the artifacts and displays. Was really shocked at the museum's framing of the John Brown's raid on Harpers Ferry. Being from PA, I was taught in my school that this raid was an attempt to trigger a large-scale slave revolt. Poorly organized it was quickly put down and John Brown was later executed for his troubles. The museum stepped through the events of the raid and characterized John Brown as a "terrorist".

Makes you wonder how different parts of the U.S. teach certain parts of "American" history, huh?
