Has anyone tried this and is it a good idea?

(133 posts)Hi, I did look into it and opted not to do it.
Bottom Line:
The data on your personal driving is recorded and shared/saved with your insurance company and since it is now their data it is subject to all the risks associated with hacks and 'sharing'.
The dollar savings for me would not amount to significant savings. I'd rather not have a tracking device on my car.

(10,513 posts)My mom had a perfect driving record and agreed to have one installed. Her rates went up by 1/3.
It is a scam to increase profits. Another scam is accident forgiveness. For people worried their rates might go up IF THEY HAVE AN ACCIDENT, they can pay more (higher rate) to have accident forgiveness IF they have an accident.

(12,027 posts)says I will save 10% but I will not be tracked and for every tiny thing they don't like be charged more, no way no how!!

(8,512 posts)It was temporary to qualify for some kind of deduction. I consider myself to be a cautious driver, so I anticipated that I'd do well with it. One of the problems is that you get "dinged" on absolutely everything. Someone pulled out in front of me so I had to brake less gently than I would have liked, and I lost points for that.
It's been a few years, so I don't remember everything, but I do remember that I was happy that it was over when it was time to send the device back.

(34,103 posts)And yes, that sometimes includes going over 80 mph on the interstate. Meanwhile, no tickets, no accidents that were my fault (was rear ended 10 years ago, and 20 years ago).

(3,900 posts)I would never give that kind of knowledge about my life to my insurance company (it was an option for me), and I'm a very boring person. It's creepier even than knowing your mobile phone tracks your whereabouts all day because this info goes directly to your insurer.

(13,227 posts)the speed limit? How much over the speed limit?
Does the plan only allow you to see a lower premium or does it raise your rates if you drive like me?

(4,044 posts)I'd save about $400 per year if the thing measures my driving to be perfect.
I don't think it's worth the potential consequences of the lack of data privacy.

(1,828 posts)I get a lot of lane departure warnings in the same places every time. Possibly due to painted lines on curve? Sometimes you have to deviate if you are next to a driver close to the line...
I think its very unforgiving. Have considered turning it off.

(37,771 posts)That was when I was insured with Progressive and I don't recall how much I saved
It wasn't a big deal .using it.
If you want to save a few bucks, give it a whirl

(8,512 posts)It has skyrocketed. I'm not happy. I have a perfect driving record. I don't speed and haven't had an accident in decades.
I'm going to shop around, but I'm not holding out a lot of hope that I'll find a lower rate.

(34,103 posts)when I asked my agent for rates for 50/100/50, the difference was a like $10 a month. It's crazy! I didn't like his tone and I'm shopping around as well.

(68,978 posts)Our insurance crept up well over the rate of inflation. After 10 years, with that company, I shopped around. Cost dropped over $35 per month.

(34,103 posts)If you're comfortable setting up a policy without an agent. The site makes it easy for you to keep changing the numbers around to see how it affects the policy price. I'm about to cut my amount in half, without the use of a ridiculous tracking device. Their site shows you what the price would be if you agree to their device, so that's good too. You can also save nearly $100 by paying the 6 months up front.

(20,617 posts)And am not by any means a perfect driver.
I save about $20 per month per car right now. When my teen starts driving I of course will have a much higher rate. It will then save about $70 per month per car.
Is it a good idea? That is up to each individual.
Consider, however, everyone who says they don't want anyone tracking them probably has the most effective tracking device ever create on their person at all times. They even willingly pay for the signal that allows them to be tracked.

(20,617 posts)It starts at 10% and now I am upto about 12%. They adjust every 6 months.
Now if I could just see those speed limit signs a little clearer...

(3,438 posts)The device plugged into the analysis port on my car and recorded my driving for about a month. It saved me about $5 or $6 a month, but these days every little bit helps. I'm retired and I don't drive very often, and rarely on the freeway. I'm insured with Progressive and have been for 20 years. I've checked online with a several different insurance companies over the years, and always, the quote is HIGHER than what I'm paying now. So, I'm sticking with Progressive. Hope this helps.
A HERETIC I AM
(24,534 posts)I drive a 16 Vette. I also drive tractor trailers for a living. I have well over 2 million miles without an accident and Im damned sure not going to have some device telling me Im not operating my car safely because I accelerated too quickly or used the handling capabilities of my car to a point not even close to their limits.
No. Bloody. Way.

(9,533 posts)We chose the app method, and not the plug-in device. After about 2 months, we got an email stating that we could now delete the app and we would be receiving a 10% discount on auto policies going forward.
The app wasn't perfectly accurate, but we scored an "A" and got the discount.
As someone else has said here, we are already being tracked by our smartphones and several other methods, so I didn't worry about privacy.

(3,600 posts)Rather we like it or not. Yea it's conspiratorial but do you trust insurance companies and auto manufactures to have your best interest at heart?

(19,800 posts)Every time the premium comes due, it also shows me how much it has been reduced due to our safe driving as measured by the trackers.
