Over a million signatures filed to force recall of Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker

Democrats and their allies in organized labor say they delivered over a million recall petition signatures against Gov. Scott Walker (R) Tuesday, far more than the 540,208 needed to spark a recall election.

The filing kicks off the latest phase in a fight over collective bargaining rights that began almost as soon as Walker took office last January.

Democrats also filed 845,000 signatures to trigger a recall against Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch (R) and enough to recall four Republican state senators, according to party chairman Mike Tate.

Last summer, Democrats attempted to win back control of the state Senate after the Republican leadership passed legislation limiting public workers’ bargaining rights. They recalled two Republicans but fell one seat short of flipping the chamber.

Walker recall leaders say they gathered more than 1 million signatures

Leaders of the effort to recall Gov. Scott Walker said Tuesday afternoon that they have collected more than 1 million signatures on petitions they will file later today.

That number would nearly match the 1.12 million votes Walker received in the November 2010 gubernatorial election.

Recall organizers also said they had more than enough signatures to force recall elections against Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch and Republican Sens. Terry Moulton of Chippewa Falls, Van Wanggaard of Racine and Pam Galloway of Wausau. The group working to recall Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald said earlier Tuesday that they had collected more than enough signatures to recall him as well.

But Walker's opponents still must transform public outrage over his pushback against unions into actual votes to oust him from office. If the governor is worried, he's not showing it: As petitions were delivered to election officials, he was out of state raising money to defend himself and the agenda that has made him a national conservative hero.

Scott Walker recall campaign collects more than 1 million signatures

(snip)

The number of signatures collected to recall Walker rivals the 1.2 million votes the governor received in his 2010 campaign. Forty-six percent of the 2010 electorate signed a recall petition for Walker, Lawler and others at the news conference noted.

Political science professor Barry Burden says the number of signatures gathered to recall Walker carries "absolutely huge symbolic value."

"It also suggests serious organizational prowess on the part of United Wisconsin," he says. "One million signatures mean they needed to collect almost 17,000 per day."
