These people who are so adamant in their belief that it doesn't exist...my question to them is even if it doesn't exist, shouldn't we be doing more to preserve our planet anyway? I mean who wants to live in a place where the air is filthy, and the water is trashy and polluted? If all the scientists and experts are wrong about climate change, then it's no big deal. But if the skeptics are wrong, it'll eventually be the end of the human race.

(7,044 posts)And yet at the same time they worshipped Rev. 'I-am-the-Second-Coming-of-Jesus' Moon (R) because of all the ill-gotten cash he pimped the Repubbie party with.
Olde 'Second-Coming' Moon (R) has recently KicKed the BUCKet -- so I expect the Repubbie Fundies are actually destroying Planet Earth to bring about the THIRD COMING OF JEsUs.
After the election, it seems a safe bet that HE will not arrive for the tHurd cOminG on a Mormon White Horse (R).

(60,006 posts)the "man holds dominion over the earth" types that think whatever gets in the way of what they wish to do - typically profit/money.
the "it's all in *name you god*'s hands - that just lives in great fear day to day waiting for some sort of rapture and has no belief or understanding or trust in science
the truly selfish/greedy bubble livers who could care less about the future (I think this is a subcategory of the first I mentioned)...it's all about them, and screw everyone and everything else.

(27,461 posts)the evidence of global warming is very important because it will be very costly to prevent it. To say "it's no big deal" if scientists are wrong, is a mistake, imo.

(5,191 posts)As the OP observes, even if global climate change doesn't have the potential - as 100% of those who devote their lives to studying these topics assure us - to usher in some global catastrophe, we are already paying other costs resulting from the behaviors that cause global climate change. Even laying aside the intangible costs to the general public of poor air and water quality, there are direct market costs in terms of increased respiratory diseases, increased healthcare costs, lost labor productivity, lost taxes that would have been paid from that labor, etc.. If we invest in cleaning up our environment, we benefit from that investment even if global climate change doesn't turn out to pose the grave threat forecasted.

(5,191 posts)... is that they're willing to take the risk. So what if they're right and all of the world's combined scientists are wrong and the chance of global climate change radically re-defining life on earth is slim? As long as it's a chance, why would you want to take a gamble with such potentially devastating consequences if you're wrong? How mindbogglingly selfish would you have to be to gamble with not only your own life, but the lives of every other living thing on earth, present and future, if there's even the tiniest chance that you might be mistaken, as the entire world keeps telling you that you are? Even setting aside the lack of humility, the egocentrism is staggering.

(2,842 posts)When you combine that level of ignorance with the totally greedy and selfish-at-all-costs, it's not surprising that enough are manipulated into parroting the lies denying climate change/global warming.
It's depressing but has to be fought against for the sake of the planet.
