What would you do if you were in the President's shoes??
===============
<snip>
WASHINGTON -- House Speaker John Boehner says Republicans want to cooperate with President Barack Obama on reducing federal deficits, but not by raising income tax rates.
Boehner spoke soon after Obama told reporters the GOP-run House should let taxes rise on the richest Americans. Boehner, an Ohio Republican, said that would hurt job creation.
The speaker said there has been a spirit of cooperation between congressional Republicans and the White House. He said he is optimistic about talks beginning Friday between the White House and congressional leaders about averting the fiscal cliff tax increases and spending cuts occurring automatically in January unless lawmakers reach a compromise to avert them.
Obama campaigned for re-election on boosting taxes on the wealthy, but said Wednesday he could compromise on how to do that.

(24,396 posts)Guess not- or they just assumed that we would be impressed by their 2010 "mandate" and agree to cut Social Security, Medicare, and just about every program they don't like but extend the Bush Tax Cuts and/or make them permanent and unnecessarily boost defense spending? Have I got that right?

(24,396 posts)if they had just raised the #$(*(*)%(#&@( debt ceiling and/or pushed for/supported a genuinely bipartisan plan to reduce the deficit, they wouldn't have been put in this position. And, remember, whenever a right winger starts trying to revise history to make it seem that mean ol' President Obama bullied and pushed Boehner, McConnell, et. al, just remind them that Boehner was happy about the deal at the time and told all of us that he got "98%" of what he wanted. And remind them of how horribly Boehner failed to lead his caucus to get something done in the "Supercommittee".

(111,056 posts)...The President should talk "compromise" right up to December 31st. At that time, the ball is then in their court. They have to do something.
Also, the President can keep them in Washington over the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays in emergency session until they decide to get their stuff together.
Also, he could request that they work on an over-all tax reform, based on the knowledge attained thru the tax returns of Mitt Romney, their late and great nominee. We need to close those loopholes.
We will stay here until the people's business is done.
It is your call, Mr Boehner...

Certainly, we should have never went into the sequester deal but everyone thought it was cool to take money out of the economy so there it is but no way, no how should we let this tar ball collect any more hostages to keep it rolling.
Everybody should knuckle down and be ready to pay their Clinton level taxes and our officials should then be prepared to put forward legislation to provide some relief to low earners and make the TeaPubliKlans to vote them down without the ability to hide behind "opposing tax increases for all".
The tax cuts are pretty much their ideological spine. The refusal to snap it is fucking maddening.
We need tee shirts and signs that say something like "I'm ready to my taxes are you, Grover?" and "Hey, Koch brothers you're paying your taxes even if I have to as well" or "America, we're all going to pay for it" or "We'll vote on cutting my taxes next year".
Something that says "make my day, fiscal cliff".
