Nevertheless, Rescorla's activities during the September 11 attacks were quickly brought to national attention by the news media, including a detailed account by Michael Grunwald in the October 28, 2001 edition of The Washington Post of Rescorla's life and "epic death, one of those inspirational hero-tales that have sprouted like wildflowers from the Twin Towers rubble."[23] Other memorials and tributes to Rescorla include:

Post-9/11 media coverage
Rescorla was the subject of a 2002 biography, Heart of a Soldier by James B. Stewart.[44]
Rescorla was the subject of a 2005 documentary entitled The Man Who Predicted 9/11. The film was shown on Channel 4 in the UK and the History Channel in the United States.[45]

(30,329 posts)Rescorla had boosted morale among his men in Vietnam by singing Cornish songs from his youth, and now he did the same in the stairwell, singing songs such as one based on the Welsh song "Men of Harlech":
Men of Cornwall stop your dreaming;
Can't you see their spearpoints gleaming?
See their warriors' pennants streaming
To this battlefield.
Men of Cornwall stand ye steady;
It cannot be ever said ye
for the battle were not ready;
Stand and never yield!

Dark n Stormy Knight
(10,036 posts)RWers love a "don't trust authorities" anti-government, anti-expert, anti-intellectual message. But Resorcola was an expert and authority. All humans seem to be prone to oversimplification, confirmation bias, etc., but RWers are true experts in that. Another irony.
mountain grammy
(27,324 posts)because his story shouldn't be hijacked and we should mention that always, and the story IS NOT about not disobeying orders, it's about being prepared and knowing your job, and doing your job.... all things right wingers know NOTHING about.

the authorities aren't always right. But at the same time, when they are right and someone decides to disobey their orders, more people can die. It all depends on the situation. The authorities tell people in Yellowstone to stay away from the Bison. Good advice. Authorities on planes tell the passengers to stay seated and put their seatbelts on. Good advice. Authorities tell people not to panic and to walk calmly from a burning building. Good advice. This meme encourages jackasses to be jackasses.

(8,387 posts)Him getting the people out of the building relied on the fact that it was his position to tell them to do that, and to have them do it.
So it is doubly ironic to use him for the purpose of saying "Don't listen to people who usually know what they are doing" since he happened to be such a person.
He was the head of security for Morgan Stanley for a reason.
Look at the picture. He's standing there with a bullhorn, telling people what to do.
So people should have said, "I'm not like the other sheeple. I'm not leaving this building because he says to. I'm keeping my ass planted right here."

(6,927 posts)He was a lieutenant in the First Cavalry Division at the Battle of Ia Drang (LZ X-Ray) in 1965 and he used some of those same Cornish songs to maintain his men's morale during an intense 3-day battle.
