Over the past six years, the Orlando Sentinel has spotlighted a slew of publicly funded voucher schools in Florida with disturbing policies and woefully inadequate educational programs.
Weve found schools that flat-out refuse to serve children with disabilities with written policies saying that they simply wont accept kids in wheelchairs or who have conditions like autism.
Also schools that refuse to admit students who are gay or even have gay parents. Again, were talking about written policies that explicitly say students can be expelled or rejected for saying the words: I am gay. We even interviewed a mom whose kids were admitted at one Florida voucher school until she started dating another woman, an Air Force veteran. Then her kids were denied admission.
Weve also found schools that had high-school dropouts working as teachers, that operated out of rundown strip malls and that taught children all sorts of fictional nonsense.
In each and every one of those cases, GOP lawmakers have said: Well, thats how school choice works. Parents get to choose.

The schools get to choose.
They chose those who will profit the school the most and reject those who will cost the most to serve.
Then, there is the 'you're not worthy excuse', proffered by the least worthy among us.

(2,677 posts)At least two dozen US Catholic dioceses have declared bankruptcy after paying a total of at least $3 Billion in sex abuse settlements.
Add the diocese of Baltimore today.
And that's just in the USA.
Grooming. Pedophilia.
Is Florida doing anything about the grooming and abuse that goes on there? The following are the settlements paid in Florida.... not a complete list of sex abuse cases.
In 2004, the Diocese of Orlando reported paying $4.2 million in settlements to address abuse allegations dating between 1968 and 2002.
In 2004, the Archdiocese of Miami agreed to pay nearly $3.5 million to settle priest sexual abuse claims.
In 2005, the Diocese of Orlando and the Diocese of St. Augustine agreed to pay $1.5 million to three victims of priest abuse. The Orlando Diocese was originally part of the St. Augustine Diocese when the abuse took place. Thus, the dioceses each agreed to pay half of the settlement.
In 2011, the Diocese of St. Petersburg reported paying $4.7 million to settle priest sexual abuse claims. This sum includes settlement payouts, legal bills and victim counseling fees.

(2,677 posts)"At the 2021 convention, member churches voted to conduct an internal investigation of sexual abuse within the church.
Complaints about sexual abuse and sexual assault on the part of pastors were sent to higher-ups who then kept those accusations quiet. Though the report, by Guidepost Solutions, was only commissioned to study the cover-up from the years 2000 on, it found incidents of sexual abuse and warnings of the same going back to the 1960s. In all, Guidepost found accusations leveled against people at all levels: church volunteers, staff, and leadership, including those at the top of the churchs ladder. Those accusations were made by people of different ages and genders, and they include allegations of child sexual abuse, the grooming of adolescents, and the sexual assault of adults."
