He was hospitalized tuesday night in Macon, Ga with pneumonia. R.I.P., Mr Haggard
It seems that the radio station got this wrong, even though they said they just confirmed that he had passed on. If it isn't true that he passed on, let's all wish a full and speedy recovery for Merle Haggard.
Peace,
Ghost

like the hippies out in San Francisco do."
I can still remember thinking that if Muskogee was going to be immortalized in song, then I would have preferred something more relevant to Creek culture than redneck culture.
Still, a catchy tune, and an American classic.
And you have my permission to like Lynyrd Skynyrd too, and no, I do not want the inaugural DU3 "Sweet Home Alabama" flamefest.
on edit: Hi Ghost!

(13,905 posts)I know for a fact that he changed his tune on pot. He mellowed over the years for sure.
I did sound for him in the 70s a few times. He got along just fine with us hippies.
RIP Merle!

(62,444 posts)The ballad is performed from the perspective of a character telling the story or whatever, and the impulse is to attribute that perspective to the artist.
Kind of like how I used to hate actors who played characters I hate.
Then I realized - those are really good actors to make me hate their character.
Nobody ever said Jerry Garcia snorted coke and operated steam locomotives.

What radio station was it that you heard the news?

(35,699 posts)Origin
Mark Twain quotation after hearing that his obituary had been published in the New York Journal.
Mistaken publications of obituaries aren't as rare as you might expect. A recent example is of Dave Swarbrick, the British folk/rock violinist, who was killed off mistakenly by the Daily Telegraph in April 1999 when they reported that his visit to hospital in Coventry had resulted in his death. He did at least get the opportunity to read a rather favourable account of his life, not something we all get to do, and to deliver the gag "It's not the first time I have died in Coventry".

(36,974 posts)Maybe the word 'rumor' should be added to the subject line of the OP until there is a news article link that confirms it.
The OP here is over 30 minutes old and there is absolutely NOTHING anywhere about his death,
only news about him being in the hospital

just can't seem to find anything, oh, "insensitive", "inappropriate", or beneath "community standards".
dude the rules don't say anything about not being allowed to post about left handed rabbit stompers so I guess we have to leave it up.

AUTOMATED MESSAGE: Results of your alert
At Thu Jan 19, 2012, 11:15 AM you sent an alert on the following post:
Just heard on the radio station that Merle Haggard has passed away...
REASON FOR ALERT:
This post is disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate. (See Community Standards.)
YOUR COMMENTS:
Merle Haggard is not dead and the OP posted it and carelessly didn't bother to fix it later on to correct it.
JURY RESULTS
A randomly-selected Jury of DU members completed their review of this alert at Thu Jan 19, 2012, 11:23 AM, and voted 3-3 to LEAVE IT ALONE.
Juror #1 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: Is being wrong a reason to hide a post? A reply can easily show that the singer is not dead.
Juror #2 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: Sometimes we hear things reported on the news and they turn out to be untrue.
It wasn't disruptive.. the person heard it early this morning is more than likely at work and can't respond.
I checked and he's still not dead.
Juror #3 voted to HIDE IT and said: I assume the OP isn't aware of his mistake.
Juror #4 voted to HIDE IT and said: Ugh. I hate that this was the given reason, but I cannot verify that Merle Haggard is dead, only in hospital. If the OP won't edit for correction, then the post should be hidden.
Juror #5 voted to HIDE IT and said: I am voting to hide it but isn't this the responsibility of the forum moderator? Just asking...
Juror #6 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: I don't know whether he's dead or alive but being INCORRECT is not the same thing as being "disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate." This is abuse of the jury system, IMO.
Thank you.

(9,213 posts)Posting a celebrity is dead who is still alive isn't "disruptive" or "over the top"??? Looks like DU's got some problems.

(11,001 posts)Haggard is expected to remain hospitalized in Macon for a couple of days to recover from pneumonia, his publicist said Wednesday.
Haggard, 74, wasnt able to perform Tuesday night at the City Auditorium and was reportedly being treated in the Georgia Heart Center of The Medical Center of Central Georgia.

(62,444 posts)The OP may be a correct report of what was heard.
The OP does not assert that Mr. Haggard is actually dead.
It reports what the poster heard on the radio.

(62,444 posts)Everybody keeps saying they heard Obama is going to abolish social security and medicare, and I don't see anyone chasing after corrections on that.
So, Merle will survive this thread, with any luck.
Or were you suggesting the poster should go kill Merle Haggard, in order to correct the situation relative to the OP?
There's always more than one solution to a problem, you know.
CreekDog
(46,192 posts)he's basically posting that someone died (who didn't).
he's now back in the thread to say that he's not fixing it and to go (pound sand) call the radio station (which he said he would provide -but didn't).
the OP doesn't give a sh*t.
legally actionable? no. but that's not the standard. the standard is that if you post something that's a big deal (someone dying is) and it's wrong, you correct it. that's what an adult does.
but some people here feel that to actually hit that edit button and say, "whoa, what i posted, even though i heard it from someone else, turned out to be wrong --or looks to be wrong...sorry" would cause them to get attacked by bats and zombies and suffer horrible, painful maladies as a result.

I only posted what I heard on on a radio station as I was flipping thru stations. They said it was *confirmed*. Hell, I didn't even know he was sick.. or even still alive, for that matter. I remember listening to him as a kid, because that's who/what my parents listened to.
If the station was wrong, I apologize for repeating their erroneous reporting....
Peace,
Ghost

(14,912 posts)I was flipping thru stations, and don't normally listen to country, but the station said they had just confirmed that he had died. I went to bed right after posting, and have been busy today. If I can remember what station it was, I'll give you their info and you can call them and harrass them about it, ok? I hope you didn't stay up all night due to a stressful OCD outbreak over this!
