Below the new Face of Versace (model Cindy Crawford's daughter, btw) you'll see a pic of Donatella Versace's daughter. Is Ms. Versace not aware of our societal anorexia problem? rant.off.

(28,581 posts)Now it's the poor oppressed skinny people? really?
I am currently in the fight of my life, for my life, to get my weight down. In the meantime, I endure either nasty looks or I am ignored, I prefer to be ignored. Even when I go to the gym I know what people are thinking and saying about me. Society says I am not allowed to be seen as a woman, a sexual being and if I try to dress up or make myself look sexy in anyway that just bring ridicule.
You really cannot compare what skinny people go through to what heavy women go through. We are shamed every day, told to hate ourselves everyday, told we are ugly, lazy, worthless. Mostly when I leave the house I am hoping to just be ignored long enough so I can run my errands and get home. I try to go to the Y when it is least busy to avoid being an object of scorn while I sweat on the treadmill.

(2,286 posts)Can you read minds? You may want to consider how much of this is in your own mind. I'm saying this from experience. So many times I have let what I think other people are thinking about me hold me back. Truth is, hardly anyone is thinking about you or investing the amount of emotional energy into you as you are about your perceptions of their thoughts. I'm sure there may be a few, but most people are concentrating on themselves and their own workouts.
Just go do your thing. You can make changes and get healthy. Any ugliness in their minds is most likely permanent and really their problem. Don't make it yours.

(140 posts)why models of this body mass are still used. The average size of women is what a 14 or 16? Only starving Ethiopian women could relate to this size.
AngryAmish
(25,704 posts)1. Clothes hang better on a thin person.
2. Thin women are all the same, heavier women are all different. Two woman who are 140 lbs each may carry it in different spots. Some have bigger butts, some bigger breasts, some bigger arms, etc. They only send one pair of clothes to the agency and expect the model to fit the clothes with minimal alteration - pinning here and there. If model don't fit they get new model.
3. Most advertising is aspirational - you want to buy the product. Thinness is fashionable. So they want a thin model for the product.

Sera_Bellum

http://www.usatoday.com/tech/columnist/aprilholladay/2006-12-04-size-age_x.htm
I currently wear a 1 or a girls 14 or 16. I've had weight issues in the past of being too skinny, but I HAVE to lift weights to keep enough weight on me.
That said, knowing that I've been on both sides of the fence, we DO focus way too much on body weight and youth instead of appreciating health.
This child - and she IS a child - is 10. She has NO business being in a skirt that short. Yeah, I could wear it, but I am an adult (and it kind of sucks that I have to even resort to shopping in the kid's department because every designer assumes all women are 5'8" and taller).

(23,720 posts)Skorts are skirts with shorts built in. Sometimes I think people come here just to see what the can feign outrage about. i don't see anything unhealthy looking about Cindy Crawford's daughter and if what she has on is a skort, it is not too short. She doesn't appear too thin nor does she appear to be made up to look older than her age. I see nothing overly sexual about her outfit. So yeah, what is there to be outraged about?

Honestly, when I got down nearly past 80 lbs, I DID kind of look like a cancer victim and it took my doctor threatening to put me in the hospital to get me to take better care of myself.
If you are in your early thirties and weigh in the 80's at 5'3", it's not healthy.

(39,961 posts)79 lbs. if I thought I was anorexic, I would have told you that, NO, I was still eating, I was just emotionally upset. And mostly it would have been true.
At some point, we have to face the fact that we can't punish ourselves that much, even when we are emotionally dying inside, because it could happen again to us, and the circumstances won't make our recovery so easy. Or at least, I did.
I'm not trying to judge or lecture, cher.
We are here as a community. We can do several things, but here is what I am here to do. Help others. Help myself. Tell the truth even when if makes me emotionally naked. And never dismissing pain. We heal ourselves by admitting it. I apologize if this is out of line.
polly7
(20,582 posts)I absolutely believe young girls / women ...... and boys / men, should know how dangerous trying to attain an overly-thin physique. I just didn't realize the woman in the photo actually 'was' anorexic until I googled for information on her.
That is why I was making the point that there are millions of skinny people in the world who, simply because of genetics alone, will never weigh what most others do ..... I thought her health was being judged on a photo alone ..... it turns out that wasn't true.
Aerows
(39,961 posts)need to be careful, too, though because if we get too thin, it's very hard to come back. I'm sure you experienced something similar with your father's death, which by the way my most heartfelt condolences.
We also have an "I can't let myself go" factor, in that we have a genetic propensity to get dangerously underweight.
polly7
(20,582 posts)so true, we haven't got the reserves to fight back with against serious illness. I have 8 brothers and sisters, of whom two have ever said they felt the need to lose weight and probably wouldn't be considered too slender ...... so far we've all been pretty lucky health-wise. That can certainly all change in an instant, though.
REP
(21,691 posts)Not that I spend a lot of time making snap judgements about people, but to me, it's obvious when a person is who is very slender and healthy is just that - skin is a giveaway (there are others, but skin doesn't lie).
I have no doubt it is every bit as tiresome and unhelpful for the very slender to get "for your own good" advice about eating as it is for those who are overweight. I'm sorry anyone has to put up with intrusive bullshit about something so personal.

Allegra Versace has been in treatment in the past for anorexia. I wonder what influence growing up around the fashion industry had on her. I wish her the best. It's a dreadful disease. One of my friends in college had it and when we graduated it had not gotten much better. It really is tough to treat anorexia.
All women have different body shapes and my main problem with the fashion industry is that they only show one standard. I am 5'4 and will never be tall and skinny. I am not overweight but a size 8 or 10 is considered "heavy" to the fashion world, which is ridiculous.
