Thank you for contacting me regarding the potential creation of a debt commission. As you are aware, our country's largest entitlement programs, Social Security and Medicare, are extremely important to our nations seniors. However, both of these programs have considerable structural deficiencies that are projected to lead to insolvency in the next decade. Without Congressional action, Social Security and Medicare beneficiaries will see significant reductions in payments and care. It is important we keep our promises to ensure that Social Security and Medicare remain solvent for future generations. As the Senate considers this issue, I will keep your comments in mind.
As your United States Senator, my primary job is to understand and represent the interests of all South Carolinians. The opportunity to hear from you about the issues confronting our nation is not only essential to representative democracy, but allows me to better serve the people of South Carolina. We will not see eye-to-eye on every issue; however, I promise to always give your concerns the consideration they deserve.

I dont know about any of you, but I paid into Social Security my entire working life, now expect to receive the benefit, I paid into.
Edit to add, the Senator is none other than Lindsey

Social Security isn't an entitlement program, you paid, every paycheck, into it. You didn't have a choice in participating or not. It is money owed to you with interest. According to the contract.
I don't remember if we signed a contract saying the Feds could take a cut off the top to pay for my elder years, or if it was implied.
It is my belief that the debt Congress talks about is the interest that the government owes on the bonds for the monies borrowed from the Social Security Trust fund to pay for their appropriations.
Thanks for allowing me to rant, this is a pet peeve of mine.

(182 posts)4. In 1984 Reagan started taxing benefit deductions right from the paychecks.
Right on time. We never saw the money, but it was taxed as if we'd received it. Then the benefits were taxed when paid out. Again. I don't understand the pundits (?) or pontificaters who keep saying that Social Security isn't taxed twice. Taxes were figured on paychecks without deducting anything for the Social Security bite.

Cap steals from the middle class and puts it in upper class pockets. Enough
