There's nothing that anyone here can say that will change my mind. We are going to do great things over the next 4 years. We are going to roll over "conservatives" and undo the terrible damage that they have inflicted on us. When it is all said and done President Obama will be widely regarded as one of our best presidents, ever, having gotten us out of 2 miserable wars, having saved the economy from a Great Republican Depression II, having reversed the divestiture of the middle class and the trend toward concentration of wealth, having advanced the effort to provide everyone with health care, and having done various other things that will get us going back again in the right direction.
Anyone who doesn't agree with me on this can go pound sand up their butt.

That has always been the cornerstone of our party - that we are allowed to disagree unlike the GOP where you have to vote with the party or be ostracized.

(11,605 posts)I admit, I put him up on a pedestal sometimes. But we need to hold his feet to the fire...he said so himself.
I just don't like it when "holding his feet to the fire" turns into personal attacks, as often happens on these forums.

(11,605 posts)But the way you said it came across as if you were saying that we should support him no matter what. I knew what you were saying, but maybe reword your post to clarify?
treestar
(82,383 posts)I don't see us having a chance to hold his feet to the fire. We could if Congress were more liberal than he is, but so far, it just is not. We have to go after Congress more than the President with the present-day situation and the 113th Congress. And aim for a Dem Congress for 2014. When the 2014 election comes up, I'm going to be super-suspicious of those who spend more of their time criticizing the President than the Republicans, for that reason. It might have made sense for the 111th Congress, which was Democratic (though still to the right of the President), but in the present situation, it won't.
Cary

(11,605 posts)As they are the ones who have to run for re-election and need our support to raise money and volunteer on the ground.
We don't really have that leverage over the president anymore, since he can't run again. But I am encouraged so far that he seems to be handling this well and does not seem inclined to cave. He will probably makes some compromises but he has the upper hand in these negotiations.
JaneyVee
(19,877 posts)actually elevate him to "Greatest" status. And that all comes down to the fiscal cliff. IMHO, absolutely NO Democrat should take part in weakening Social Security or Medicare. Let the GOP fall on that sword. THIS is our legacy.

(27,787 posts)I ask because as a candidate in 2008 he said he'd escalate the war in Afghanistan.
So if you voted for him, you knew he'd do that. And it must not have been a big enough concern to prevent you from voting for him.
For me, I thought it was the right thing to do. Bush started that war, and then neglected it so he could invade Iraq. I believed that Obama was right to try and refocus on Afghanistan.
And now that OBL is dead, its about time to start to end it. Which is the plan.
I recall so many on DU claiming that Obama was never going to get out of Iraq. They did so right up until it ended. Then they moved on to other outrages.
Cary
(11,746 posts)The first was a Senator here whom I knew personally, the one before President Obama was our Senator. I liked him and there was no way I could vote for Carol Mosely Braun.
The second was a judge whom I really like.
There may have been one or two more, I don't remember, but generally I vote straight Democratic.
As for President Obama I definitely voted for him in 2008. I too supported his idea of the surge in Afghanistan. I'm not sure what that has to do with anything.
I don't know President Obama personally but I have good friends who are Illinois Senators and they know him well. I also know people who were in his law school class. This is an incredibly talented, brilliant man. You don't get to be editor of the Harvard Law Review if you're not brilliant. I didn't go to Harvard but I know quite a few people who did, and I can tell you that don't even get into Harvard Law School if you're not brilliant.
I have good reason to admire this man and to be proud to support him.
JoePhilly
(27,787 posts)I was asking that question of some one who was responding to you and questioning YOUR support of Obama, specifically over the escalation of the Afghanistan war.
You might want to (a) back your support level for Obama down to say 95% (no one is perfect), and (b) try to not pick unnecessary fights with those who generally agree with your support for Obama.
Make sense?

(27,787 posts)I mean, you did not vote for Obama in 2008, I'm guessing you did not vote for him in 2012.
So what is your plan going forward?
Spend another 4 years complaining on DU?
Tierra_y_Libertad
(50,414 posts)DU is a mild diversion in which I try to hold public servants accountable. Even Democrats and presidents. I think that there a group of progressives already here who would prefer a progressive as president.

(5,275 posts)There are some things that trouble me a great bit. One big one is the fact that there has been no massive perp walk of Wall Street execs. Nobody can blame congress for that, it's all on Obama and Holder. It's mystifying. Selling crappy investment wrapped in better ones to people while shorting them at the same time is fraud 101.
All this is the reason why so many pensions went bust. But far from being charged, a good number of the high level white collared thieves got 500 million or so dollar payouts. However Obama/Holder have done almost nothing about it - and if I can see it plain as day they sure can too.
There is one main reason they haven't gone after them, and it's the reason our political system is broke - it's not so good in too many ways vs truly awful party wise now. Nice choice. We need desperately to get money out of politics, to go to public funding of elections to end the lobbying/bribery game that's played out over and over.
Cary
(11,746 posts)The reason they haven't gone after the banksters is that we needed them. We were looking into the abyss colsholibgal. We really were. When you want to fix something, whom do you look to? Do you look to people who have no experience and no clue?

It is pure speculation on my part, of course, but given the state of the economy at the time it seems pretty obvious that a decision was made to not come down too hard on these institutions. I don't know if you realize how serious this was. AIG, in particular, holds some enormous number of annuities, life insurance policies, pension funds, ... I mean if we crashed AIG it could cause WWIII.
We're talking trillions of dollars here.
If I were privy to all of the information here I might be inclined to second guess but I am not privy to it and neither are you.

(12,958 posts)We should be following the lead of Iceland. They did not bail out the bankers, they jailed them, along with the politicians that conspired in the fraud. Iceland gave relief to homeowners, cancelling a large part of their fiat bank debt. The result was that after their economy shrank in 2009 by 6.7%, it proceeded to rebound in 2010 by 2.9% and in 2011 by 2.4%, outpacing the gains of the European Union and other developed countries. Fitch Ratings concluded:

(37,573 posts)For myself, I support policies, not people. That's why I am not ashamed of supporting John Edwards, because no matter what flaws were in his character, there was still truth in his two Americas speeches and in his focus on the poor.
If Obama proposes policies that help the bottom 60%, then I support him. If, like a good DLCer he proposes policies that help the top 20% and the corporate world, then I oppose him.
If he tells the truth, then I support him. If he tells lies, then I oppose him.
The fact is that Obama is not going to do anything to slow the "trend toward concentration of wealth" if he keeps proposing tax cuts that give far more to the top 20% than they do to the bottom 40%. Obama plans to keep the Bush tax cuts for all income under $250,000. That will give $163 billion in tax breaks to the top 20%, including $40 billion to the top 1% and only $14 billion in tax breaks to the bottom 20%. If he decreases inequality by doing that, he will go down in history as one of the greatest magicians of all time.

Are we dumb? I don't know but I do know that we're winners and that the old white guys who "want their country back" are dead enders, purveyors of a dying ideology that didn't work out very well by any measure.
Is it smart to be a purveyor of a dying ideology that didn't work out very well? I would think someone who was so much smarter than I am would be right about something every now and then.
And then there's the hyperbole. "Messiah?" Really? Someone who is so smart ought to be more creative and original even if they're on the outside looking in. Repetitive use of silly epithets isn't impressive, or an indication of any real intelligence.
The USA is 4 me, the real one and not some nostalgic vision of what some fascist imagined it to be in the 1950s. No, the creepy fascist who waxes nostalgic doesn't need the USA. This person needs John Galt's island. This person needs to flee and prove Ayn Rand's third rate science fiction fantasy once and for all. Go. Take your ball and go, like any demoralized pre-adolescent Ayn Rand cultist will do. Show us. Show us how much we need you.

(11,746 posts)But I have taken so much grief for not being interested in trashing President Obama--that's what this is really about.

(2,928 posts).... Looking carefully at DU posts. Trashing the president's policies or political actions is not trashing the Pres. himself.
I can't think of a true trashing of the man here at DU. Most even say: I really like the guy, before going on to despise something his administration has done.
great white snark
(2,646 posts)Though I give him the benefit of the doubt 100% I cannot fully support every decision he's made. Like others have said, politicians should have a higher burden to earn your support and even President Obama shouldn't get all of yours.
