They have David Rubenstein in common. Today the billionaire founder of the Carlyle Group donate that amount to the government to repair the monument damaged by last summer's earthquake.

(50,130 posts)The Carlyle Group profited from the blood of thousands of GIs and hundreds of thousands of Iraqis. While I revere and adore the national treasures in Washington, I despise the Carlyle Group and those who make those ghoulish decisions. It's time for Republicans to stop obstructing the preservation of our heritage through "austerity."

(67,697 posts)I posted a while ago about how few other first world countries have as vigorous a culture of "giving" as the US because we don't pay enough in taxes to have our needs met.
Here we have one of the nation's most well known, most instantly recognizable monuments being supported by some billionaire. Okay, he gave the money. Nice. Thanks, pal. But where is our COUNTRY?? We can't afford $7.5M? Really?
Then raise the fucking taxes on guys like this.
