https://www.commondreams.org/news/medicare-advantage-cost"The time has come to declare MA a failed experiment," write the authors of a new paper.
Jake Johnson Jun 10, 2024
Citing the nonpartisan Medicare Payment Advisory Commission, the paper notes that Medicare Advantage (MA) plans have overcharged the federal government to the tune of $612 billion since 2007and $82 billion last year alone.
MA plansnow used by more than half of the eligible Medicare populationutilize a range of tactics to reap larger payments from the federal government, which provides insurers a lump sum for each Medicare Advantage patient. The size of the payment depends on the enrollee's health, which MA plans are notorious for portraying as worse than it is in order to receive heftier government payments.
"Paradoxically, despite those overpayments, MA plans spend 9% less on medical services than [fee-for-service] Medicare spends for comparable enrollees," reads the new study. "If MA plans pay for less care, where do the overpayments go? Some pay for supplementary benefits, although plans do not disclose how much they spend on them, and MA enrollees do not get significantly more dental care or incur lower out-of-pocket dental costs than those in FFS Medicare. Instead, overhead and profit eats up the lion's share."
The study's authors estimate that MA plans' overhead from 2007 to 2024 was $592 billion, which is "equivalent to 97% of taxpayers' $612 billion overpayments to them during that period."

(20,577 posts)I turn 65 in a few months, and every day I get some kind of ad trying to lure me into a Medicare Advantage plan. Some are even offering free dinners at local restaurants in conjunction to an "information session" on an MA plan.
They wouldn't be offering to pay for my free dinner if they didn't think they would reap big profits off me!

(28,436 posts)Apparently, the banks and credit union I use have shared my info. I can't tell you how many numbers and emails I've blocked or how many fliers I've ripped up and thrown out. The volume is ridiculous and exceptionally intrusive.
The last time I got a call, I answered. Before the woman, who had left her name on a previous message, spoke, I addressed her by name, told her to stop calling me, and that I was blocking the number. Then I abruptly hung up on her.

(24,486 posts)It has never denied paying for any test or procedure, has paid for all of my dental care and eye care as well as a pair of glasses each year. They have also provided $174/month for healthy food which helps me eat and I have become fond of eating.
So I have nothing bad to say about my Medicare Advantage Plan.

(7,880 posts)(you don't have to answer the questions, obviously). Just trying to point out that as long as you don't have a serious medical issue some of these plans sound great -- but the minute you need serious care, you may face being denied life-saving treatment.

(3,529 posts)I had to have emergency gall bladder surgery. The total hospital bill was $87,000. My co-pay, with my Kaiser-Permenente Medicare advantage (Washington State) was $825, and I got affordable payments for that. My last prescriptions cost $10 for 4 of them. When I had straight Medicare, I went to urgent care with the flu. In addition to what Medicare paid them, I still owed $205. I'll take my KP-MA care every time. YMMV.

(22,717 posts)I might buy an extra one in addition, but not a replacement. Some states don't let you back in after you opt out, and some don't pay all of your bills. The details and limits are too much for most people to sift through. But the little extras: free dental coverage, doctor office rides, etc, don't make up for those risks.
