May they all experience cruelty and hatred in their lives someday.
My daughter has NVLD (Non verbal learning disorder). It was very hard as she was growing up. Add to that also anxiety and depression. Several suicide attempts and much acting out. Mercilessly bullied at school, and taken advantage of. She is now in her mid 20s and getting much better at managing her emotions and thoughts. We love our daughter unconditionally and got her help to manage her condition. So I have first hand experience in what the Walz family has to deal with.
To see these inhuman monsters make fun and mock Gus just makes me want to do some very unspeakable things to them. The anger and rage I feel is definitely irrational...They have no idea the pain the family goes through. Fuck them hard. Many other emotions and feelings rolling through me right now but I will not type them, I would get arrested.
Sorry my first post is not uplifting, but I have to get this off my chest. I need to go for a walk in the woods or something to calm down. Thanks for understanding.

Those attacks on Gus are nasty and evil and anger me, too. Attacking a minor like that gets my Dad Instincts up, too. You can tell the deep love in the Walz family. They are good people. If Gus were my son, Id be very proud of him. He knows his feelings and isnt afraid to express them.
Now the ones who make fun of him - those I pity. They dont have that kind of love in their lives, probably never felt that love and never will. All they know is hate, fear, and pettiness.

But Tim and Gwen Walz also deserve positive attention for the way theyve discussed their son, Gus, who came into the national spotlight thanks to a piece in People magazine, about his nonverbal learning disorder and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. That makes him double-neurodiverse.
Simply having a neurodivergent son is not enough reason for him to be praised; indeed, many parents of neurodivergent children have been harmful to their children and peddled harmful ideas, including the idea that vaccines cause autism. Rather, what makes the Walz familys story so reassuring is that they seem to want to help Gus live a good life rather than change who he is.
According to the Child Mind Institute, nonverbal learning disorder, or NVLD, affects nonverbal forms of learning like the ability to notice patterns or learn concepts, including visual and social patterns as well as concepts in language and math. Because of the similar traits, people with NVLD are often confused as being on the autism spectrum and vice versa. Most recently, comedian Chris Rock disclosed that he received a diagnosis after a friend initially thought he might be somewhere on the autism spectrum.....
The Walzes words and their embrace of their son may seem utterly unremarkable. But thats the point. Loving your children, celebrating their gifts and embracing them fully ought to be unremarkable whether theyre neurodivergent or neurotypical. Neurodivergent people deserve parents who are dedicated to helping them thrive. They deserve family members who know that the way they love, interact and see the world, while different from their neurotypical counterparts, deserves the same respect. ......
At the same time, it is still a step forward that the Walz family doesnt see Gus as deficient and has instead focused on what is possible for him, such as obtaining his drivers license. Importantly, with the national profile they now have, the Walz family can serve as a model to show parents of children with developmental disabilities the joys that come with embracing, and not mending, their children

As I've gotten older, I've learned to be mindful that none of us know what that other guy is going through. It could be anything or nothing; the point is we don't know. So we should be kind. This applies to assholes on the road or assholes on the street.
Now once it is learned that their lives are going just fine, then fuck them. Republicans never grew up that far and it's unlikely they ever will, considering they worship a man who stopped growing emotionally at the age of 2.

(24,180 posts)I am in tears as I post this. I too had a slight case of autism, but major ADHD and some anxiety as a child. I struggled with trying to be "normal" with my peers, getting, teased and mocked. I had language issues also because I came to the US from Germany. My teachers couldn't understand why I wasn't able ti sit still like other kids. My saving grace was that I could sing like you wouldn't believe. Since I was ina Catholic school it carried me quite far and I feel very blest for that talent.
Keep on fighting for your child and others who suffer from these issues. Our job is to make the world understand. May you be graced with strength and the assurance that so many of us suffer from such conditions and that also so many admire you and wonder if they could fill your shoes.

(15,114 posts)It's like (I think it was) Jeffries said - Trump is like the old boyfriend you dumped and keeps coming back. Time to turn the page on him cause he's old news.
This mockery and cruelty used to work for them. Sadly, it did. But now people are just tired of it. Tired of Trump. Tired of Vance. Tired of the rest - Jordan, Greene, Boebert, Johnson, etc.
I mean, look at the strength of our bench. It is amazing how many strong, young, articulate Democrats there are, and who does the GOP have after 14 years of Trump - first the birther thing, then the 2016 campaign, then Jan 6, and now 2024.
It is Trump fatigue, definitely, but more than that, people are finally waking up to common decency.
Every time he or his surrogates like that Crispi critter say something outrageous to 'own the libs,' it makes Trump look smaller and smaller and smaller.
Remember the old CS Lewis book The Great Divorce. It is about this reporter that takes a bus from hell to heaven and sees that hell is a little tiny thing of no real significance, actually microscopic. Heaven is huge, and the bus, instead of driving on a linear road, simply enlarges.
Or, Lewis aside, it's like Coach Walz said last night - its the fourth quarter and we're a field goal behind. But we have the ball. We're gonna drive it down the field inch by inch, yard by yard, phone call by phone call, door by door, donation by donation. We are gonna RAM IT DOWN THEIR THROATS and we are gonna leave it all on the field!

(284 posts)I just talked to some typical folks yesterday, and they said things like, "They're all corrupt. Harris is no better. Sure, Trump is bad, but he wants to stop taxing tips, and then Harris picked that up. It was his idea." BS like that.
The convention is awesome. Yes, the Democrats probably have at least a dozen high-profile people who would make excellent presidents. But it's preaching to the choir. MAGA ain't changin'. How we win this election, I'm not sure, but we must. But if the unthinkable were to happen, I don't think the Democrats should accept the results. If you think Jan. 6 was something, I would suggest the Democrats would have no option but to use whatever strategy was necessary to keep Trump from taking office. That, IMHO, is where we are.
PatrickforB
(15,114 posts)its quite that high. Sure, he got 70 million votes in 2020, but many of those were right leaning independents, and traditional Republicans (not MAGAs).
In the meantime, Trump and Vance have alienated:
- Women
- Traditional Republicans
- Black/African Americans
- Hispanics
- The LGBTQ community
- Unions
- Teachers
- People with disabilities, or with children who have disabilities
- Independent voters
- Millennials
- GenZ
- People who want gun background checks and assault weapons bans
I mean, the only people the Trump has is his 'basement dweller' MAGA cult and the billionaire parasites.
People are dropping away from Trump in droves. We have to get the vote out. Do that and we save the republic for another fifty years.
ShazzieB
(18,756 posts)I agree with all of this (and I think I want to read that CS Lewis book). But I just have to ask, who is "that Crispi critter"? I'm dying to know, but I can't figure it out.

(12,599 posts)My late brother-in-law was what was referred to in those days as mentally retarded (a kinder era would have called him simple). He was one of the gentlest, kindest, friendliest people I've ever known, a hard worker, nearly always cheerful, someone who brightened the day of everyone he encountered. When they were growing up, my husband, who was a couple of years younger, spent a good portion of his youth in fights trying to protect his brother from the bullies and mockers and just-plain-mean assholes who targeted him because he was different, because he would not fight back, and because they could make him cry. So, for my husband, seeing the meanness directed at a gentle neurodivergent boy because he cried with pride in his daddy, is beyond infuriating and outraging. He's right there with you.

(746 posts)Your child is so lucky to have you to help and love them! For the Republicans cruelty is the point--always. It's exhausting to have to deal with their stupidity and hate. Your anger and rage are not irrational, it is totally understandable. You are an empathetic person who has a child that went through some very hard times because of their learning disability, depression, and anxiety disorder. The mistreatment by classmates made everything worse, and now you are watching it happen to another family. This time on a national scale. Your anger does you credit. We must all be angry about this malevolent, disgusting group of people, and channel that anger to defeat Trump and the MAGA party FOREVER! No one should ever be made to feel that they are not important and valuable to our society. We must support each other and care for each other! We know what were dealing with and we just need to come back anytime something like this is put out there, with an appropriate verbal response, keeping a level head and not going off half cocked. This isnt to say that we shouldnt be firm and call the appropriate radio station or newspaper or any other vehicle responsible for this awful awful hurt full nastiness. Just need to be measured about it so we have a desired effect to hopefully put a stop to this irresponsible behavior.
