Former President Donald Trump on Monday is expected to tie Vice President Kamala Harris to the chaotic Afghanistan War withdrawal on the third anniversary of the suicide bombing that killed 13 service members.

Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, is expected to visit Arlington National Cemetery to pay his respects to the service members killed in the bombing outside the Kabul airport. Trump will then go to Michigan to address the National Guard Association of the United States conference.

He negotiated an exit with the Taliban, excluding the sitting Afghan government. One agreement is we agreed to a date certain to leave (May 2021). They agree that if in that time we were drawing down troops, they would not attack. Trump left office with a very small number of troops left in Afghanistan and many areas back under Taliban control.

When Biden came in he had 2 choices. One to immediately commit a large number of new troops which would be attacked as they came in, the other was to leave as Trump had negotiated. The troops left by Trump were insufficient to prevent a Taliban takeover.

Biden opted to leave, but pushed back the date by several months to allow the planning needed to have a smoother exit. Trump had done NO planning to allow Afghans who worked with us or Americans living there to safely leave. Although American soldiers dying is bad, the exit could have been far worse.

I suspect early on the difficulty in telling what happened is connected to the fact that the overwhelming number of Americans wanted the war over.
