Atlanta Jewish Times publisher suggests ‘hit' on Obama, apologizes

"In a Jan. 13 opinion piece, Andrew Adler offered three possible options to ensure Israel’s security in the Middle East: a strike against the terrorist groups Hamas and Hezbollah, an attack against Iran, and having Israel's U.S.-based Mossad agents assassinate Obama.

"Adler said “a hit” against the president would “preserve Israel’s existence.” He said Vice President Joe Biden would then be able “to take his place, and forcefully dictate that the United States' policy includes its helping the Jewish state obliterate its enemies.”"

Not sure what to say. Kind of stunned.

1. Secret Service investigating Jewish newspaper column that discussed Obama assassination
Fri Jan 20, 2012, 08:40 PM
Jan 2012

The Secret Service said it is looking into a recent op-ed from an Atlanta publisher that floated the idea of green-lighting Israeli Mossad agents to assassinate President Obama in order to improve Israel's security against enemies like Iran.

The publisher and author, Andrew Adler, reportedly has apologized.

But Jewish advocacy groups condemned his comments as "outrageous," and Secret Service spokesman George Ogilvie said the agency is "aware" of the incident.

"We're conducting the appropriate investigative steps," he told FoxNews.com.

Was it a stupid, offensive column? Without question. Does he deserve the condemnation he is receiving? Yes. But did he actually advocate for the assassination of the President? No. He wrote a column speculating as to what the Israeli government might consider doing in a hypothetical situation and suggested that the Israeli government might consider the assassination option as being on the table -- an option he described as "almost unfathomable."

So it was a stupid ass column that should and hopefully will derail his "journalism" career and haunt him forever. But it wasn't in any way criminal.

And it remains to be seen exactly what the consequences are for Mr. Adler for writing his despicable column. Of course, since he owns the paper, comparing his situation to Helen Thomas is a bit of apples v. oranges. My hope is that he is forced (by sponsors and/or other investors if there are any) to fold the paper or to sell it; at a minimum he needs to step down from having any editorial involvement in the paper.

The terrorists said so themselves. Also our cruelty to the Iraqis didn't help, including starving the Iraqis and bombing them from Saudi soil throughout the 90's.

for Palestinian human rights, but I really don't think any of our soldiers have died "protecting" Israel.

The United States certainly supports Israel, but the United States has a history of supporting all kinds of sorid regimes, like the military junta in El Salvador in the 1980s or for a longtime the Apartheid regime in South Africa. We do it because it think it's in our strategic interests, which very seldom are in fact the interests of the majority of Americans. I'd like to see ideally the US stop supporting Israel, and one secular, democratic state with equal rights for all in what is now Israel and the Occupied territories (though I wouldn't scoff at a serious two state solution based on 67 borders), I don't think the wars in Iraq or Afghanistan were at Israel's behest.

in the world have the Clout financially , politically ,religiously than does Isreal. And the fact that soldiers have'nt died directly at the " Behest " has nothing to do with the other Diplomatic decisons we make at the " Behest " of Isreal and our support for them , Sirhan Sirhan used a pro-Isreal decision to assassinate RFK .

we can disagree with what other nations do, but the job of the president is to look beyond those differences to live with that nation. We will always see our elected leaders ally with and work with nations and leaders that may be reprehensible to us. So, faulting Obama here is a bit unfair.

Could he pressure Israel to be a better neighbor and should he? YES! Believe me, I'm a big critic of Obama, and I despise the Israeli government and the fundamentalists that empower it.
