(525 posts)Which depressed our turnout and caused early / mail voting to go more to trump while the country awaited Comey's verdict. Which was nothing to see here. Too late to undo the enormous damage.
I don't see that happening this time.

(9,148 posts)gain power through fostering fear and perceptions of unstoppable power. Ridicule is an essential tool to poke holes in these self-aggrandizing egomaniacs. Making fun of Trump is an important part of defeating him. The people likely to support him dont want to hitch their wagon to a deflated balloon covered in loser stink.
usonian
(18,914 posts)I would rather paint him as old, feeble, angry, vengeful, criminal and so on.
Just what he splattered all over Joe Biden.
It's funny, but with a sharp knitting needle.
I worry as I did in 2016 about pure ridicule. This is an election, not a military draft, as when the Stooges or even Charlie Chaplin ridiculed Hitler. He wasn't on our ballot.
A chuckle tolerates.
I grew up just after WWII and would look at the stuff my uncles left at my grandmother's house.
Some was chuckles, but some was gruesome, racist stuff.
Chuckles let you sit on the couch.
The more gruesome stuff got you angry enough to enlist.
From the stories of brutality and torture in the Pacific, they were sadly true at the time.
I'M NOT CHUCKLING.
YMMV, of course.

2024 is not 2016.
Can we be happy while concentrating on winning? Can we accomplish two things at once?

I have my fun, and you may have seen my computer graphics. One has Lady Liberty shoving a torch up his fat ass. Another has kids having fun with his shock collar. I'm a pacifist and as tolerant as anyone short of Jesus himself can be, but this POS is PURE EVIL, like any devil you meet in the Twilight Zone.
I'll tell you what's funny.
Thanksgiving dinner when his goose is cooked.
Kanamits hauling him away.
Trump fleeing to his bunker.
And especially, him enjoying a TRUMP STAKE
If your knife ain't got an edge, it's only good for spreading warm butter.
As I said in an OP with zero rec's and zero replies:
Conspiracies and gossip deflect from Dump's crimes, his Project 2025 agenda, and from Harris and Walz.
I can't say if people are tired of them. Obviously not enough to dismiss them.
But positive change requires energy and focus, and Maybe that has been the strategy all along. Neutralize the opposition by sucking all the air out of the room. Fascist playbook? When has it been anything else?
Let's face it. No new scandal is worse than anything we have already heard. Mud don't get any dirtier.
Can you tune it out? Consider the effect of the time and energy you are spending. Is it making a difference?
What can you really do to send him to the bunker?

(81 posts)It's how Trump is reacting that is different, he hasn't been able to turn it around to his advantage as much as in the past. Probably due to his cognitive decline, he's overreacting and making mistakes. That was really evident in the debate. I know folks who voted for Trump last time who didn't like him then, hate him now, but would have voted for him anyway over Biden (not friends of mine, people I know from living in conservative areas). The mocking and bringing attention to his "weirdness" won't change anything with his hard core cult members, but I think it's working with the ones who don't really want to vote for him. If nothing else they may stay home, and that helps Kamala win.
usonian
(18,914 posts)He has completely lost his mind.
I believe that Joe saw that a drastic change would clearly point out his advanced age, inferior logic, and ...
let's face it, his allegiance to things like " pride, greed, wrath, envy, lust, gluttony and sloth."
It's really hard for anyone not to notice that he's completely deranged.
So maybe the ridicule works.
I just like the positive message versus the "Spanish Inquisition" message of the RW.
That's how I see things, but I have a historical perspective that others might not have in abundance.
Note that Hitler didn't completely go off the deep end until later on. (MUCH too late)
The History Channel has a show called "High Hitler," saying how his doctor loaded him with drugs.
There's a quote (verified by Snopes) that:
TIL Theodor Morell, Adolf Hitlers quack personal physician, prescribed him cocaine eye drops, heavy doses of oxycodone, and amphetamines, sometimes up to 20 times a day. To combat Hitlers excessive flatulence, he prescribed Doktor Kosters Antigas Pills, a mixture of atropine and strychnine

(81 posts)Always wondered why so many people practically worshipped him when he looked like a nut to me, not to mention how they could have supported his evil. When Trump came along and was so successful in using the Hitler playbook, I began to understand. Have seen some stuff in recent years on the History channel about how Hitler manipulated the crowds and the media of that day. Yes, it appears that Trump may be following Hitler off the deep end, and let's hope folks see the light before it's much too late.

(12,016 posts)Optimistic, excited, ready to do whatever it takes to cross the finish line and deliver a deathblow to Agent Orange's campaign specifically and the MAGA Movement in general. Though I believe it will take several cycles to obliterate MAGA, Donald Trump can be and will be defeated. First steps.
Of course, the optimism and excitement alone won't win this thing but that vibe is definitely a plus because it gets people motivated to register, phone-bank, write postcards, canvass door-to-door and most importantly, VOTE.
We're in a good place at the moment with 52 days and counting. The polls are up for Harris and supporters are energized. Yes, we've seen this before, and then had our hopes dashed. But this isn't the 2016 election. Kamala hasn't been dragged through every propaganda dumpster site for decades, nor has she had a bruising primary to split Dem voter sentiment nor a sizable 3rd party opposition.
No doubt there will be surprises between now and November 5th but Harris has proven to be formidable while being well-liked, Donald Trump is deteriorating before our eyes and the GOP is in disarray with in-fighting and money woes.
I'm still cautiously optimistic but I'm loving this Vibe!
Arthur_Frain
(2,234 posts)there was a point in the debate, just after he was completely overmastered by Kamala, when he reverted to blurting slogans as if they were fact. Shortly after that he got the flop sweats, and you could see he was just trying to endure to the finish line. He knew he lost a half hour before it was over, he was already spinning the BS.
