I read that we would know that oil was running out when they started exploiting tar sands and shale. That was considered at that time to be the sign of the end times for oil.

We are there and doing very little to prepare for the post-oil future.

On edit: I should add that "years ago" means the early 1970s.

My Father was a mid-level manager for Atlantic Richfield (ARCO) from the 1960s to the mid-1980s and he has the same opinion.

For all the resources we are putting into exploiting these resources we could be doing simple things like solar panels on houses to reduce demand and making vehicles more efficient.

he was exposed to daily is probably what caused his bone marrow disease later in life. Yes, when I think of what we could be doing with all that money we're pissing away ruining our environment, it makes me ill.
