Moreno's abortion comment rattles debate in expensive Senate race in Republican-leaning Ohio

Moreno's abortion comment rattles debate in expensive Senate race in Republican-leaning Ohio

An off-the-cuff comment about reproductive rights by Republican Bernie Moreno in Ohio’s tight Senate race has put abortion at the center of debate in the most expensive Senate campaign this year. And that’s just where Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown wanted it.

Moreno insists he was joking after cellphone video surfaced of him criticizing women whose votes are driven by concerns about government involvement in abortion decisions.

“Sadly, by the way, there’s a lot of suburban women, a lot of suburban women that are like, ‘Listen, abortion is it,’” Moreno said at a town hall in Warren County on Sept. 20. ”‘If I can’t have an abortion in this country whenever I want, I will vote for anybody else.’ OK. It’s a little crazy, by the way, but — especially for women who are like past 50, I’m thinking to myself, ‘I don’t think that’s an issue for you.’”

Brown and his allies pounced on the comment, which went to the heart of the Democrat's bid for a fourth term representing the Republican-leaning state. A woman featured in one TV ad wondered why, if a 50-year-old woman doesn't have standing to feel strongly about abortion, a 57-year-old man — that's Moreno's age — running for Senate would.

Even fellow Republican Nikki Haley, the former presidential candidate, criticized Moreno as #ToneDeaf. "Are you trying to lose the election? Asking for a friend,” she quipped on X.

Democrats need to run with it. A political gift to Sherrod Brown.

And why do all self serving conservative males think post-menopausal women don't care about future generations of women (not to mention their daughters, sons, friends, etc.)?

Don’t tell me what “should” be important to me just because you are a male who thinks he knows best. He has no idea what he’s talking about, that’s very obvious. A sound majority of Ohioans voted to preserve abortion rights. I can’t wait to watch this hateful dimwit lose.

But thinking things through isn't the way the GOP works. They love sound bites and they lie as they are total con artists. The GOP always promise to get the deficit under control and then explode it. Most GOP administrations lead to larger amounts of toxic synthetic drugs flooding into our poor communities leading to increased chaos.

(and excuse me, is believing in abortion like believing in God? Really?) I ask him if he's ever been pregnant. I'm willing to go on and ask him if any of those pregnancies have been diagnosed as incompatible with life? And on, and on.

Abortion is NO ONE'S decision other than those specifically involved, meaning the woman and her doctor.

Maybe most women over 50 never heard Moreno's speech, but. . . Wow. Clearly the abortion bans are dangerously affecting women over child-bearing age, in addition to women in child-bearing age.

The Lancet recently reported about 33% of Oncologists surveyed said abortion bans limit the care they need to give to patients.

Plus, some of the banned medicines are routine essential prescriptions for likely many women over 50 with chronic conditions like leukemia, breast cancer, lupus, Rheumatoid arthritis, etc. I would imagine many of women over 50 in Ohio, and their families would not take kindly to Bernie Moreno's ridiculing them if those women need care banned by abortion bans.

We can see, manifesting itself in real time, an organized effort to systematically cancel rights women have needed, enjoyed, and made good and positive use of, for HALF A CENTURY.

They really are trying to send women back (AND BACKWARDS) to the 17th century. Or even farther back than that.

Back to “Woman As Property” times.

This shouldn't be happening.

In 6/2022, when SCOTUS overturned Roe v. Wade, I viewed other country's policy on abortion, and even in Russia and other Authoritarian countries at that time, abortion was legal.

I can stomach a lot, but the far right truly intends to overturn most human rights, at the hands of what is in essence an Int'l. Mob and Cult. The infiltration of our Federal LE/Justice system shouldn't have been allowed to happen. I believe our leaders at the top of FBI/DOJ/Justice should have had the moral fortitude to do their jobs, knowing the majority of Americans would be behind them. It's sickening.

Haley isn’t criticizing Moreno from the correct side of the issue; she just wants him to not be so open about his views.
