As for me - I've seen the hanging chads and Gore V. Bush, so I'm working under the assumption we won't actually know who the next president will be or which party controls Congress until December.
I think Total Wine/ Wall to Wall Wine will be the real winners.

(5,949 posts)A lot of people here at DU are still pretty salty about 2016.
That said ...
I think a lot of people resented the assumption that HRC would become President. So they went a different way with their vote. All of them should ask themselves honestly "How did that work out?"

it would go this far.

(5,949 posts)Prior to 2016, Trump hadn't embraced the culture warrior wing of the party. So yes - in 2016 people didn't necessarily think this was going to turn out the as bad as it did.

But then, there's the Electoral College!!! 😬
Sigh.
Still I feel a bit better after hearing Sen Klougbachar on Lawrence tonight.
Am encouraged that so many women have been out pacing the men voting wise so far.
So back and forth my moods go!
Now off to check out her Las Vegas rally!👍

Decent odds, but not decent enough given what will happen if things go badly.

(18,272 posts)I'd feel better if the polls could be counted on to be accurate and that they showed Harris with a sizable lead. All these professional analysts predicting a Trump victory are very unnerving.
I don't want to go through another four years being ashamed and embarrassed to say that I'm an American.

We are going to see a historic win.
Turn off the polls. They are meaningless. Ignore the negativity.
We are going to see history made in 5 days.

(5,949 posts)According to Nate Silver (who has been wrong before), both candidates are about tied. On the other hand, both candidates are within the margin of error of a blowout. I'd just say - go vote

(1,055 posts)I believe that we will win and that it will not be as close as we might think. I donated again today to Senate candidates since this will be my last donations before the election on Tuesday. We voted yesterday, along with our Gen Z granddaughters. Our state is reliably blue, and with our awesome candidate running against an old unhinged unintelligible orange man, I have to believe that the majority of citizens will make the only sane choice. Looking forward to a long night next Tuesday.

(267 posts)He and his ilk have offended nearly every segment of society in the United States (with the exception of aggrieved white men). So, it is hard to imagine how they expect to prevail in the vote count on November 5, 2024. It is also hard to imagine that his cult followers will risk their personal freedom and safety in the election aftermath to save this snake oil salesman.

How do I feel? Kinda like this

(4,411 posts)Trying to remain calm and optimistic. Pretty sure Harris wins, but then the work will really get hard. They are gonna pull stunts that will really create problems. If we take the House and Senate, I will be more calm about the coming months, but I expect trouble in my little red corner.

ALSO don't want my daughter to spend time with her. THANKSgiving may be somewhat constrained.

(11,312 posts)I'm nervous, but cautiously optimistic. I think that we're going to get a few good surprises in the Senate race and will hold the Senate. (Loss of WV, but pickup in either TX or FL). I think we'll win the House, too. I think that people are just tired of the Crazy Caucus. I think we'll see a few of the Free-Dumb Caucus go.
A part of me is still wondering which country my husband and I should flee to if the worst happens.
Algernon Moncrieff
(5,949 posts)That's going to look different for everyone. It might involve relocating to another state or it might mean stepping away from the country. Consider whether you or your spouse have grandparents born in a country that will consider extending citizenship on that basis.

(11,312 posts)My grandparents on my father's side were refugees from the breakup of the A-H Empire, Germans from what's now western Romania. I was just reading about this on an e-mail list. Emigration requirements are pretty strict for Germany and Austria. On my mother's side, my great-grandparents were Croatian, but probably too far distant for citizenship. Because so many non-Croatians are buying property there, they've tightened up on the rules for owning land. My GF's father had land somewhere, but we don't know where it is. It's probably the local landfill now.

(34,461 posts)Anxious because I have no idea what will happen.
Angry because I truly lay this predicament at the feet of Garland and his DOJ.
Scared because I really can't do another trump term. I have uncontrolled stress and blood pressure issues. But even setting that aside, companies are already submitting to a potential new fascist reality. It's really scary. Would it even be safe to post on du on January 21 if trump wins? When would the mass door to door immigrant inspections begin?

(3,684 posts)If it's a fair election I believe VP Harris will win, but I do not trust the 6 on the SC not to make up a technicality to steal it for Donny.
They may have done the right thing in 2020. This is 2024, however, and they have granted Trump immunity, and in recent days have decided on a purely partisan basis to declare illegal voter suppression by Republicans legal.
I am pissed because this race shouldn't even be close, and too many people downplay the danger and chaos he will cause, and don't think anyone should fight back even if he starts having people executed. Our elders fought facists in WWII in other countries, yet the current living generations won't even fight against them taking over here?

(9,338 posts)I watch and record all of the polls, especially in Pennsylvania so in the last week I suddenly was thinking that Trump was going to win. He was slightly ahead in most of the battleground states. Today, Harris is doing a better (shes ahead by a few points in Penn and Mich) so I am thinking that things are heading her way. Maybe the rally he had helped. Also, hopefully this thing with his threats towards Liz Cheney will have an additional effect.

(35,586 posts)I like the momentum in swing state polls. I like the outrageously stupid things that Trump keeps doing and saying that push the sliver of undecided voters toward Harris.
I'm doing what I can to help out. Voter hotline tomorrow and Sunday. Boiler room for 20% of Ohio from 5:30 AM - 10:00-ish on election day. I'll probably also volunteer to chase provisional ballots after the election, if either the Harris/Walz margin in Ohio or the Sherrod Brown margin is smaller than the uncured provisional ballots.

Here in GA we're bombarded constantly with political ads & election news. I'm ready for it to be over. I'm hopeful I'll go to bed happy Tuesday night & wake up happy Wednesday morning. I remember well the dread & horror I woke up to in 2016. I'm glad I have the Penn State-Ohio State game to occupy my mind today.
