Or we are less than 5 years away from Elon Musk being crowned king.
I am not kidding.
This guy is going for kingship.
PROVE. ME. WRONG.

(28,835 posts)I get hyperbole, but this one is a little over the top.
Considering how little happened to Facebook after the Cambridge Analytica debacle, don't hold your breath.

X should be declared public. It is a news service. Operating the major outlet like a political hack ... but of course is it any different than Faux News.
One editor controls it. Musk. If we all leave it's ruined.

Now the sides have flipped. What's that tell you?

(36,557 posts)I think they wanted it declared a part of the Fourth Estate.
It would be no more nationalized than the NYT or WaPo--neither is owned and run by a Department of the Media, Press department, with an assistant cabinet secretary in charge of approving on behalf of the government the major editorial stances of the organizations.
We don't have Liturkas, Pravdas, or Izvestiyas. And shouldn't.

(28,835 posts)No. It's a social media site. It's not any more a news service than Truth Social, Facebook, and all the others.
Metaphorical
(2,371 posts)a semi-private open trust project - it wasn't intended to make a profit, but rather serve a mission. However, it was a corporation run by a board of directors, most of whom felt that they couldn't afford to keeping it run privately, especially after Musk started waving around big money.
I think at this point the best thing that the US could do, perhaps in conjunction with other countries, is to build an open social media platform, something analogous to what NPR used to be before a Republlican Congress (more or less successfully) privatized it.
Then they can take the shambolic corpse of X-Twitter and hit it with so many fines that Musk sells it off.

(36,537 posts)I don't know if Musk ever became a US citizen? I know he can't run for President, but that won't stop him from conspiring with Putin. He's already doing it now.
He needs to be fined so heavily that he can't keep it going. Or maybe Xwitter can be merged with Chump's Truth Social and let them take each other down.

(28,835 posts)Come on. It was full of disinformation, racism, hate, and bots, well before Musk took it over.
Just because it's worse now doesn't mean it was all sunshine and rainbows before. It was a cesspit.

(62,513 posts)...and how every, single, damn leak, was Twitter trying to be reasonable, neutral, and pro freedom. Anti hate.
Musk has turned it into a cesspool of hate and propaganda.

It is beyond stupid to allow that much power to go to one private person.
