So we are going to be on Mars during donnie dipshits term.
It’s about a 15 month trip one way. Lift off in less than 33 months. Hope that little piece of shit, muskrat is on it.

to even return to the moon.

Not reliable technology.

We lost the plans to the Saturn 5 heavy booster and, so far, neither NASA nor SpaceX nor any other effort has a reliable vehicle to get us to the moon and return back to earth with people. Yes, there are prototypes being tested... but nothing reliable yet.

SpaceX Starship... is not reliable.

We have yet to solve the issues surrounding long term space flight for humans on a interplanetary voyage. I'm talking not months of exposure to solar radiation, but years of it since a round trip will take at least 3 years at present ( with both the earth and mars orbital positions where they are right now and given the energy needed for a direct to mars flight path. Other trips could be shorter but require us to build the mars vehicle in space and fuel it with multiple LEO flights and waiting until Mars and the Earth are in more optimal positions relative to each other.

For a long duration flight, we need a huge vehicle... with a lot of shielding, something on the order of flying the ISS to Mars and back or the Jupiter mission from the movie 2001 A Space Odyssey. Presently that is out of our ability to build even if NASA or SpaceX started today. Not to mention the cost would be... in a word... astronomical.

I used to play these games ( theoretical paper what if games ) at NASA ( because they let anyone there play at creating a theoretical plan ).

Sorry MOB fans, but that is the truth. Plus, there is NO compelling reason to send PEOPLE to another planet... we can do much better sending rovers with AI. They are much cheaper, they can do almost everything a person can do, there is no risk to human life, and they have proven that they can operate on Mars for years per rover.

One was 5 years after the first test flight... the other was 20+ years after the first test flight.

Space flight isn't easy... and will never be "safe"

And Starship can carry up to 250 tons in a "one way mission" mode...

We agree re: no need for manned exploration at this time.

and act like "acceptable loss" is OK.

KC or Kalpana Chawla was a friend and "internal customer" of mine while I worked at NASA. She had an office 3 doors down from me. We were all so proud when she joined the astronaut core.

And her death, in fact ALL of the Shuttle disaster deaths, were entirely preventable.

The Space Shuttle was a goddam prototype that never should have been put into routine service. Everybody that worked on it knew that. It was Gemini to the Apollo project ( and even Apollo suffered a disaster that caused NASA to re-engineer a lot of things for the later Apollo missions ). The Shuttle suffered from a lack of funding to re-engineer and solve the issues that WE FUCKING KNEW ABOUT before Challenger... never mind Columbia.

The multi-segment SRBs with the O-rings that failed were never in the original design. A different firm located on the east coast was selected to produce single segment SRBs that could be shipped to Kennedy via the intercoastal waterway, ONE FUCKING SENATOR ( Orin fucking Hatch ) would not approve of a budget for NASA until we changed to use Morton Thiokol and the segmented SRB because they had to ship the segments on rail cars from Utah. Everyone knew it was inherently unsafe. And some of the blame goes to NASA management for allowing this.

As for the Columbia disaster, we already knew that ice formed on the external tank during fueling... and that the ice would break and hit the tiles on the shuttle during launch. There were many proposals to solve this issue but again, Congress would not give us the funds to fix it nor would NASA management pause operations. So my friend and co-worker died.

I am all for Space exploration... I could have made much more money than I did working for NASA. But I wanted to serve my country like my father and brother before me only I was born with a heart condition that prevented me from my dream of being a submarine captain in the Navy, I was even selected by Bob Dole ( of all people ) to go to Annapolis before my heart condition was discovered.

People who think a Starship explosion is unusual I said even established programs like the Shuttle blow up.

Certainly not acceptable, ESPECIALLY those that were caused by ERROR.

It's all dangerous.

Unmanned missions FTW.

And sorry for your loss... as a young man the Challenger loss was life changing for me.

With no regulatory roadblocks... SpaceX could pull it off.

They have announced an increased frequency of Starship test launches

Basically they need to put a Starship in orbit, send several more to refuel it... and have a viable landing and exploration mission planned.

I'd expect to see numerous rovers and a handful of Optimus robots on the mission.

SpaceX is fucking AWESOME just as much as Elon Musk is an asshole.

I grew up in the late 60's and early 70's taking old washing machine boxes from out by the curb and taking it in the house and using watercolor paints and markers, turning the box into a spaceship

I watched the moon landings...

I don't give a rat's ass if Jerry Seinfeld or Mickey Mouse gets us to Mars... let's go!!

There is no reason to send people there.

It increases cost by orders of magnitude. It doesn't provide us anything we can't do with AI rovers.

And SpaceX is simply doing an inefficient reusable rocket design. Much better would have been to build the real Space plane and fly into orbit and fly back to earth. Much safer and cheaper and less environmentally harmful.

I should know, I worked on the wind tunnel simulations off this for like 4 years.

Just like his self driving EV cars. Next year,... next year,... next year after that. Try NEVER.

there are people with 3 sex chromosomes... XXY and XYY. And there are people born with both male and female characteristics.

A baby born with both a penis and vagina may have a rare condition called ambiguous genitalia, also known as atypical genitalia or intersex.

So the statement by Trump and the hateful GOP is patently false on its face. Not everyone is born male or female.

Pure fantasy. What a waste of money and lives. All for what? The "glory" and vanity of putting a human on Mars? It's certainly not for the scientific value. We can learn SO MUCH MORE with orbiters and robotic landers, rovers, and helicopters.
