Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsDear DU, I thought it would never happen to me but,
I met a Trump supporter who randomly started talking politics.
A lady of post-retirement age came in to pay her bill. As we were finishing she said, "Thank God Trump is in office". Odd because we have been talking about the end of our below zero weather, it was a bit of a non sequitur. I responded with the simple fact that he is in office and she then touched all of the bases- Joe was senile, Jill is gay like Hillary, Obama has been running everything, Kamala is trans,
etc.
We had been have such a nice conversation until then.
Since I am in the real world and keeping one's job is difficult if you insult customers I replied, "I guess we will see what happens to the price of eggs." There was no applause, high-fives, or a sudden realization of the error of her ways, but it did throw her off track a bit. She said "I guess so", took her receipt and wished me a good day.
A drug prices go up for those on Medicare we will see if she remains enthusiastic about the current regime. Update to come, maybe.
Signed,
Cringing on the Inside

(1,137 posts)Veteran, I have a crew cut it is easy to maintain. I work with my hands and also chainsaw sculpt, the republican party has done a masterful job making out blue collar people as republican. I do a lot of art shows throughout the year most customers are of a liberal mindset but I get trumpers who think I am on the same page as them.
When they start blabbing I usually stop and just stare at them in silence. They get the message and exit.
I hate the fact my appearance stereotypes me.

There are many others here, too, with that background. Sometimes it scares me, but I can't afford to move.

(21,630 posts)(all three of us) we have quite a few Republican clients. There is a rare mention of politics or someone may come in with a hat or t-shirt that gives it away. This one was an exception as she just ran the gamut.

OTH I have two children wondering if they need to flee to Canada for their lives, one is gay the other trans. That is more important to me than if the price of eggs is up since last year.

(477 posts)And lack of supply of eggs.
I work in a grocery store and our egg prices have not changed much. Cheapest price per dozen is 3.49 up to 6.49 for organic. We do have a limited supply, so are usually out of eggs by noon each day.
Just yesterday a customer asked what the deal was with eggs and when I tried to explain, she stated it was a hoax and now with trump in office things will change. Told her I doubted it since we lost a quarter of laying hens last year (CA) and a commercial poultry farm in Georgia has been infected. She replied trump would just import eggs from other countries.
She just couldn't grasp how it was the avian flu and it wasn't just happening to poultry farmers in the US.
The devastation of this virus has been in the news for almost a year yet many have not heard it or don't believe it.

(477 posts)But they are clueless to what's really going on and it's all about the price of eggs.
I have to be careful cause I have gotten a couple of warnings regarding my remarks on tarrifs. So many do not understand who pays them. They also don't realize how much of our everyday groceries or ingredients are imported from other countries, especially Canada.
It just not worth it to point out their misinformation. I'm 72 and need my job for a few more years.

(96,874 posts)They are known to be a loss leader the kind of item that people go into a store to buy and then stick around to fill up their carts. Its worth it to the stores to sell them pretty cheaply.
If a person is bargain hunting from store to store already, its worthwhile to keep that in mind.

What do you think the solution is?

(36,119 posts)and that Orange Clown will be able to lower them is patently absurd, much like thinking Kamala Harris is a Transwoman.
Only solving Bird Flu and increasing supply will ease egg prices.

(806 posts)That is all about the Avian flu. and can go either direction. Instead, it is better to focus on the real economic damage that Trump is ALREADY doing.
In the last 90 days, since Trump really started shipping up the tariff talk, the cost of many electronics products has skyrocketed. I have particularly noticed hard disks and cell phones. The products I am looking for are up about 30% in that time, and I believe that is a direct result of suppliers trying to set the price at a level they can survive if they get hit with a big tariff.

20 million chickens were destroyed in 4Q because of the flu. The prices will come down as new generations of chickens are raised. Don't give Trump credit for that. The tariff threats are ALREADY raising prices. THAT is where we need to hang Trump.

(65,933 posts)Let's not mention eggs.
He has already raised a bunch of drug prices today with his EO rescinding the limits Biden put on them, although that may be reversed in court.

(89 posts)Good for you for keeping your cool while also getting in the egg issue. I have started using a different strategy when random strangers jump right into politics with me! I have started to agree with them, but then add in an appropriate comment about how I hope the government can finally deal with "issue XYZ". What I then do is pick what ever issue XYZ I think will impact them personally. So an older person - Well maybe I would go to
"Yeah I agree, let's hope the team can get rid of some of those subsidies. Seems like the first one their aiming at is those prescription drug subsidies. Fingers crossed I'm hoping they can now follow through and get this budget sorted out!"
I use a tone of voice that is believable rather than sarcastic and try and look like I really am on their team. I get my line in and then make an excuse saying I need to hurry off so I don't have to get into any further exchange. If I can put a crack in their mental armor that's a good day for me
My initial experiments with this approach are looking more promising. It at least gets them to think.

(821 posts)Egg prices are super high now, and will likely get higher, because of bird flu. But that mess is probably not going to last more than a year. Egg prices will fall considerably in the near future without any help from TFG.

(122,898 posts)myself in my rare (so far, at least) encounters with those people. One of the perks of being a retired, thoroughly pissed-off ZERO-patience BITCH is that I do not have to "go high" when they go stupid.
I just got off the phone with a friend who runs a convenience store in Grand Junction, qbert's former district, heavily magat-infested, including one of his coworkers. My friend told me that this idiot (the politest thing we call him) had just been whining to him about how Medicaid was going to take away his c-pap machine.. When my friend asked the reason, the idiot said it was because they were running out of money because the Dems had spent it all, but now that ##### is back in office, he will fix everything.
My friend was still laughing when he called me.
my head on that part of "he will fix everything" geez, these people are really delusional, how do they believe this felon will do anything to help them. The felon only thinks about himself, spreads lies and he's a criminal.
Well, they are living in their own psychosis, and sometimes it's best not to engage with them.
