Dear DU, I thought it would never happen to me but,

I met a Trump supporter who randomly started talking politics.

A lady of post-retirement age came in to pay her bill. As we were finishing she said, "Thank God Trump is in office". Odd because we have been talking about the end of our below zero weather, it was a bit of a non sequitur. I responded with the simple fact that he is in office and she then touched all of the bases- Joe was senile, Jill is gay like Hillary, Obama has been running everything, Kamala is trans,
etc.

We had been have such a nice conversation until then.

Since I am in the real world and keeping one's job is difficult if you insult customers I replied, "I guess we will see what happens to the price of eggs." There was no applause, high-fives, or a sudden realization of the error of her ways, but it did throw her off track a bit. She said "I guess so", took her receipt and wished me a good day.

A drug prices go up for those on Medicare we will see if she remains enthusiastic about the current regime. Update to come, maybe.

Signed,

And lack of supply of eggs.
I work in a grocery store and our egg prices have not changed much. Cheapest price per dozen is 3.49 up to 6.49 for organic. We do have a limited supply, so are usually out of eggs by noon each day.
Just yesterday a customer asked what the deal was with eggs and when I tried to explain, she stated it was a hoax and now with trump in office things will change. Told her I doubted it since we lost a quarter of laying hens last year (CA) and a commercial poultry farm in Georgia has been infected. She replied trump would just import eggs from other countries.
She just couldn't grasp how it was the avian flu and it wasn't just happening to poultry farmers in the US.
The devastation of this virus has been in the news for almost a year yet many have not heard it or don't believe it.

But they are clueless to what's really going on and it's all about the price of eggs.
I have to be careful cause I have gotten a couple of warnings regarding my remarks on tarrifs. So many do not understand who pays them. They also don't realize how much of our everyday groceries or ingredients are imported from other countries, especially Canada.
It just not worth it to point out their misinformation. I'm 72 and need my job for a few more years.

That is all about the Avian flu. and can go either direction. Instead, it is better to focus on the real economic damage that Trump is ALREADY doing.

In the last 90 days, since Trump really started shipping up the tariff talk, the cost of many electronics products has skyrocketed. I have particularly noticed hard disks and cell phones. The products I am looking for are up about 30% in that time, and I believe that is a direct result of suppliers trying to set the price at a level they can survive if they get hit with a big tariff.

Good for you for keeping your cool while also getting in the egg issue. I have started using a different strategy when random strangers jump right into politics with me! I have started to agree with them, but then add in an appropriate comment about how I hope the government can finally deal with "issue XYZ". What I then do is pick what ever issue XYZ I think will impact them personally. So an older person - Well maybe I would go to

"Yeah I agree, let's hope the team can get rid of some of those subsidies. Seems like the first one their aiming at is those prescription drug subsidies. Fingers crossed I'm hoping they can now follow through and get this budget sorted out!"

I use a tone of voice that is believable rather than sarcastic and try and look like I really am on their team. I get my line in and then make an excuse saying I need to hurry off so I don't have to get into any further exchange. If I can put a crack in their mental armor that's a good day for me

My initial experiments with this approach are looking more promising. It at least gets them to think.
