General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI did it. I left the rancid sewer known as Facebook. Forever.
Maybe the endless chain of suggestions of what foul right-wing shitstorm I should follow was the last straw. Maybe it was Zuckerberg's making everyone follow the felon-47 White House. Maybe it was the Kid Rock picture they forced upon my page. Whatever.
I left! And I feel free and intellectually reborn because of it.
Fuck Facebook all to hell.

(441 posts)It was MANIPULATING me, forcing things in front of me that I had showed no interest in. So much anti-Progressive, anti-immigrant, anti-LGBT, anti-DEI, anti-public schools stuff all of a sudden. It began urging me to "Look at the comments!!" on a particular thread I was not following.
Zuckerberg can stick his head up his own ass and roll down a hill of nails.

(441 posts)I think it takes 30 days to actually go away. But I'm not going back.
Sadly, what was once a fun online community that turned into a combination of Pravda, the Volkischer Beobachter, and some fourth-grader's shit-saturated sandbox.

(24,333 posts)I dont even have my own account but I use my husbands account so that I can post to a local nonprofit that I work for. That organization needs to get off FB too. I am going to push for this. Thank you.

(18,266 posts)I hope it won't be too difficult. Some leave it with no problem and never think twice about it; for others, it is a big step. Whichever category you fall into, thank you. I do think these things make a difference. (I left Twitter in the summer of 2023 and was surprised by how little I missed it.)
Think. Again.
(22,137 posts)And I sincerely believe you will be much, much better off without it.

(3,240 posts)The last time I left I just left, didn't delete my account. I left it in 2017 whenTFG took office. This time, I deleted the account entirely. So glad to put that part of my life behind me. I am developing my own circle of political allies and alternative sources to disseminate information and make connections.

Netflix has a documentary that I feel should be mandatory watching.
The Social Dilemma
Produced in 2020, and I'm afraid for our future; nothing is getting better on the social media platforms.

(94 posts)I left that garbage in 2016. It's nothing more than a right wing platform. Same with Instagram.

(41,779 posts)My last post was three years ago. I deleted any personal photos and then deleted the entire account. My only regret is the time I wasted there.
FB makes you go on a bit of a treasure hunt to find the delete button. But once you click on it you will feel pretty good.

(9,858 posts)For some reason the algorithm hasnt covered me up in right-wing nonsense. Im able to keep up with faraway friends, post my left wing musings, encounter lots of irreverent humor, and generally manage a mostly useful environment for myself.

(22,561 posts)It's not about covering you up with RW nonsense, it's about subtle manipulations that make you more receptive to things in other places.
But my main problem with FB right now is the AI generated fake content, it's like 1/3 of the content now. Fake pics of celbrities or ahtletes with people they've never met or doing things they've never done.
I am close to leaving, I do like to keep in touch with a few friends on it, but I also think it gives people the false impression that they actually still know people from their past.
I do not like that they track every website I go to even after I leave FB. I do not like that they know more about me than I even know about myself. But I don't do any other social media, it's the one platform I've chosen to stay up on a few things and people I want to track.
