Shame on them for having so many guns, but give them a pass for not seeing someone in the family had a serious problem and should have addressed it?

....in a house with a person who needed serious, serious help. That was a double whammy. But taking all the guns away won't stop all violence unless we address these issues.

I had a two former teachers of mine attacked in their home by their own son who had mental issues. He stabbed them. One was killed, the other barely survived and was able to call 911. The fact he didn't have a gun available to him was a positive....but it did not stop violence from happening.

provide access to sufficient mental health services, these things wouldn't happen.

That simply isn't the case.

This man was from a very wealthy family. Whatever help an overhauled mental health system could provide, that help was already available to Lanza. He had access to all the mental health services he could use.

Yet still, all those children are dead.

So access to mental health services is, as we see here, not sufficient to prevent these slaughters.

What we know from looking at other countries and from areas that have local gun control laws is that gun control DOES prevent or at least vastly diminish these slaughters.

The mental health argument is a canard. Of course we need to provide better mental health services. But that's not the answer here.

non-compliance? That would require licensing of guns and lists of gun-owners. How about that?

How about he can't have that Bushmaster automatic rifle with a high capacity magazine? That's the gun that he killed all the kids with. Why the hell is that a legal gun?

How about stiff restrictions and limitations on who can own handguns? How about a buyback program for handguns? How about incremental taxes for additional guns in the house? How many guns does the average homeowner need?

How about no gun purchases at gun shows? How about we close that loophole that lets Columbian drug lords and gang members stockpile arsenals?

But it really doesn't make the point you think it makes. It lacks validity in that most Americans cannot manage their lives without a car. You COULD survive quite well without your guns. Cars have multiple uses. Guns are really made for one thing...killing stuff. The fact that you like playing with your killing apparatus does not mean that it was designed for something other than killing.

And that particular analogy tends to make you look stupid. I would avoid it in the future.

Most people wouldn't race to the computer to brag on an Internet message board right away after an experience like that. Very Weird and twisted. It's amazing the evolution of the OP in this thread. The more details you find out about them, the weirder they get. This person also claims to have 9,000 rounds of ammo in his house. I'd hate to be the ATF agent that ever comes knocking on that door. Sounds like he's been preparing for the "end times".

Delete away, I don't give a damn.

That just proves one gun is too many for that DUer. He shouldn't even have access to a pellet gun.

Thank you for taking the time to show us how infiltrated DU is. I knew it all along. But you just proved how prevalent and brazen they are. They are really stupid too.

We need our moderators back and do away with the jury system ASAP. Skinner would have taken care of this poster himself with no fanfare in a jiffy. All it would take was a PM from one of us about this character and it would have been, "poof."

DO you have any step children who struggle with their family status?
Are your guns locked up and are you the only one with access?

And everyone thinks I'm a guitar nut. They're right, but I damn sure don't have any guns. That would be a different nut to crack. If I had 13 guitars, I'd have to wonder why I thought I needed that many.

Different guitars are needed to play different styles of music. I suppose different guns are used for shooting different styles of life. Is that right?

I've read that people who own guns are more likely to be killed by their own weapon than to save their own life. Do you think you are 13 times more likely to be killed by one of your own guns?

Do you have children who live with you?

...but you are basically right. Serious shoots admire the mechanical aspects of different varieties, appreciate the craftsmanship, and use different guns for different kinds of shooting. A majority of mine shoot the underpowered .22 rimfire because it is cheap, a challenge to shoot accurately at 100 yards, and because paper targets won't kill me if I miss.

Even if you hunt - a deer rifle and a pump 12 ga is all the guns you *need* to to hunt any critter legal to shoot.

Any more than that is gun nuttery.

And anyone that *needs* an Ak or SKS or AR-15 or 30 round clips does not have food-on-the-table in mind...

I have a few guns. All of them but one have been in my family and passed down through the generations. I'm not going to get rid of them just because someone thinks I might be a gun nut for having more than 2. I'm no gun nut and I don't believe the number of guns someone owns necessarily makes them a gun nut. I'm firmly on the side of gun control. I have my g-g-grandfather's civil war officer's sword also which I don't use for hunting. I don't think I'll be getting rid of that anytime soon either.

Sun Dec 16, 2012, 10:14 AM

People are grieving that twenty six- and seven-year olds were slaughtered, and he's like "I just counted my guns, tra la la...my hunting guns are MUCH more powerful tra la la...watch me list some details about MY GUNS tra la."

What a senseless fuckwit. This is precisely why many of us are done speaking with these people, and why we call then NUTS. A score of children lay dead, shot multiple times with a fucking out-and-out murder machine, and this guy is bragging about his firepower, and that's his effort at dialogue!! That's his great attempt to get us to talk to each other, a chest-pumping strut fest about his baker's-dozen of weapons! That he is emotionally deficient is clear enough. That we need to simply defeat these people at the polls and stop coddling their STUPIDITY is obvious to anyone with a lick of sense. Fuck backwoodsbob and everyone like him. The time for discussion is over. The time for simply building coalitions and forcing the public will on these recalcitrant assholes is long since passed.

I'm not asking you to leave. But you've clearly taken opposing viewpoints to the majority of the population on this board and taken loads of shit over the years. You really don't seem to be very liberal to me, which is as much as a cultural classification as it is a political one. I fully accept that I could be wrong about that.

It sounds like it would be a drag to be on this board if I were you. Tell me what your motivation is - just explain if you would indulge me? I'm actually interested - and no I'm not calling you a troll.

and your point is specious, more or less like the ignorant tripe we get from rush limpbaugh and the rest.

Are you mentally ill? on meds? are you a white male in your 20's or 30's? are you socially isolated, few or no friends, no social life or family support structure?

if the answer is no to most or all of the above, you don't fit the obvious profile of several of the recent rampage killers in our nation. I'm not concerned about you, or other hunters/collectors I know who own several guns and lots of ammo.

I AM worried about the guys who do fit the above profile, and who are allowed to run amok among us. it's a stupid and weak approach, and I wonder how many more little kids have to be slaughtered before the NRA bought and sold deadbeats in congress wake up and do something about it.
