(6,001 posts)tightening the mental health system in this country has nothing to do with guns and we need the mental health system overhauled
riderinthestorm
(23,272 posts)They either didn't get them.
Or didn't think they needed them.
THIS case isn't about a failure of mental health services. This family had PLENTY of resources to ensure this particular tragedy isn't about mental health issues.
its about a slaughter. With guns.
backwoodsbob
(6,001 posts)how many links do you need to people saying he had *issues*
I can provide a few.
riderinthestorm
(23,272 posts)Do you think, for one single second, there'd be this kind of carnage?? He never would have made it past the locked front doors since he wouldn't have had a gun to shoot out the glass.
Your defense of this is disgusting.
backwoodsbob
(6,001 posts)have you read anything I said?
I have said I'm for making the NICS system mandatory for private sales
I support a TOTAL ban on handguns...go get em and melt em all down..including mine.
Where am I defending anything?
Squinch
(50,922 posts)Would have had absolutely no preventative effect on this situation.
And given that they are now saying he used the rifle to kill the children, the handgun ban would also have done nothing to keep those 20 babies alive.
What else you got?
DonCoquixote
(13,616 posts)and they do not shoot people.
And do not try to get into an argument with my bipolar and Asberger affected brain (yes, a twofer) about mental health issues in this country, especially when I had to go on medicare, and this family had more than enough money to get doctors.
Squinch
(50,922 posts)That's because he also had access to all of his "responsible gun owner" mother's guns.
ProudToBeBlueInRhody
(16,399 posts)Shame on them for having so many guns, but give them a pass for not seeing someone in the family had a serious problem and should have addressed it?
We need to have a serious discussion about the stigma still attached to mental illness and the willingness to stick heads in the sand until it's too late. All the money in the world means shit if you don't use the resources.
backwoodsbob
(6,001 posts)you get it
ProudToBeBlueInRhody
(16,399 posts)....in a house with a person who needed serious, serious help. That was a double whammy. But taking all the guns away won't stop all violence unless we address these issues.
I had a two former teachers of mine attacked in their home by their own son who had mental issues. He stabbed them. One was killed, the other barely survived and was able to call 911. The fact he didn't have a gun available to him was a positive....but it did not stop violence from happening.
Yo_Mama
(8,303 posts)But it does happen.
Squinch
(50,922 posts)Squinch
(50,922 posts)provide access to sufficient mental health services, these things wouldn't happen.
That simply isn't the case.
This man was from a very wealthy family. Whatever help an overhauled mental health system could provide, that help was already available to Lanza. He had access to all the mental health services he could use.
Yet still, all those children are dead.
So access to mental health services is, as we see here, not sufficient to prevent these slaughters.
What we know from looking at other countries and from areas that have local gun control laws is that gun control DOES prevent or at least vastly diminish these slaughters.
The mental health argument is a canard. Of course we need to provide better mental health services. But that's not the answer here.
forthemiddle
(1,375 posts)I am not asking about how his mother may have been able to prevent it (although he could have just stolen the guns from another source), I am asking what gun control laws, outside a total ban and confiscation of ALL guns, would have prevented this from happening?
Squinch
(50,922 posts)non-compliance? That would require licensing of guns and lists of gun-owners. How about that?
How about he can't have that Bushmaster automatic rifle with a high capacity magazine? That's the gun that he killed all the kids with. Why the hell is that a legal gun?
How about stiff restrictions and limitations on who can own handguns? How about a buyback program for handguns? How about incremental taxes for additional guns in the house? How many guns does the average homeowner need?
How about no gun purchases at gun shows? How about we close that loophole that lets Columbian drug lords and gang members stockpile arsenals?

(9,854 posts)But it really doesn't make the point you think it makes. It lacks validity in that most Americans cannot manage their lives without a car. You COULD survive quite well without your guns. Cars have multiple uses. Guns are really made for one thing...killing stuff. The fact that you like playing with your killing apparatus does not mean that it was designed for something other than killing.
And that particular analogy tends to make you look stupid. I would avoid it in the future.
backwoodsbob

Different guitars are needed to play different styles of music. I suppose different guns are used for shooting different styles of life. Is that right?
I've read that people who own guns are more likely to be killed by their own weapon than to save their own life. Do you think you are 13 times more likely to be killed by one of your own guns?

(39,154 posts)...but you are basically right. Serious shoots admire the mechanical aspects of different varieties, appreciate the craftsmanship, and use different guns for different kinds of shooting. I AM worried about the guys who do fit the above profile, and who are allowed to run amok among us. it's a stupid and weak approach, and I wonder how many more little kids have to be slaughtered before the NRA bought and sold deadbeats in congress wake up and do something about it.
