At the very least he probably has severe depression which probably hasn't ever been treated. Marianne Gingrich described the breakdown Newt had during and after his ethics investigation. After his first rise and fall in the polls an his staff resigning en masse, Newt goes missing and finally turns up on a Mediterranean cruise.

Newt is on the topside of one of his manic depressive peaks and the fall is going to be nothing short of brilliant. Is it too much to hope that he takes the GOP with him?

We're in the bubble. We forget there are garden variety mean spirited bullies in the world. Newt has probably gone father than most because he is hyper ambitious. And has a moderate IQ.

That's really all the guy is. We can go on and on about what psychological illnesses he suffers (if I had to pin a disorder on him, I'd use "antisocial personality disorder," which is the official name for sociopathy) but in reality Newt is nothing more or less than a schoolyard bully. Most people are terrified of Newt Gingrich. Very few people go after him because he's a vicious fucker, but the people who have tried it have found he falls to pieces when you attack him.

There are chinks in his armor, like the massive fine he had to pay when he was speaker of the House. If he makes it to the general election, which there's about a 33 percent chance of happening*, the Democrats will go after them hard.

* Figure on the race going one of three ways: Santorum drops out and the baggers rallied behind Newt put him in the general, Santorum stays in and the baggers split the extreme-right-wing vote to give Romney the nomination, or the convention goes brokered and they make a white, protestant male CEO their standardbearer.
