Tufts University Says International Student Taken Into Custody By ICE, Visa Revoked

Federal authorities took a Tufts University student into custody on Tuesday night and revoked their student visa, according to Sunil Kumar, the school’s president.

“We have received reports that an international graduate student was taken into custody this evening by federal authorities outside an off-campus apartment building in Somerville,” Kumar said in a statement. “The university had no pre-knowledge of this incident and did not share any information with federal authorities prior to the event, and the location where this took place is not affiliated with Tufts University.”

Kumar said the Massachusetts university was also told this student’s visa was terminated, and school officials are trying to confirm if that is true. He said they had no additional information for now, and shared resources available to support students and their families.

“We realize that tonight’s news will be distressing to some members of our community, particularly the members of our international community,” Kumar said.

This detained student is the latest case of the Trump administration going after international students in its efforts to severely crack down on immigration. In its horrifyingly dystopian approach, the administration is vowing to detain and deport international students who have participated in pro-Palestinian protests, falsely claiming they are supporters of Hamas and therefore aligned with terrorist groups.

This happened earlier this month at Columbia University, where student protester and lawful permanent resident Mahmoud Khalil was arrested and baselessly accused of supporting Hamas. He is currently challenging his detention.

A Tufts University international graduate student is in federal custody after being detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials.

Rumeysa Ozturk, a Turkish national and PhD student in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, was arrested outside her off-campus apartment.

“Unless otherwise ordered by the Court, petitioner shall not be moved outside the District of Massachusetts without first providing advance notice of the intended move,” wrote federal judge Indira Talwani in a three-page order to ICE on Tuesday night.

...The judge ordered ICE to respond to the petition by Friday and to submit a written explanation for relocating Ozturk, with court notification 48 hours before. She said the government must state a reason for why transferring is necessary.

This could refer to the mass transfer of many detainees in Plymouth’s ICE detention center to New Mexico, and occasional transfers of ICE detainees to the southern border, where it is harder for them to access legal representation far from families and attorneys.

The article goes on to say a pro-Israel organization shared Ozturk’s personal information. The group, Canary Mission, had posted personal information about activists and students who protest in favor of Palestinian freedom. Ozturk seems to have been (still is) an activist.

A Tufts University PhD student on a visa was arrested by immigration authorities outside of Boston on Tuesday night, according to the school and the student's lawyer.

The student, Rumeysa Ozturk, is a Turkish national, according to her lawyer, Mahsa Khanbabai.

"Rumeysa Ozturk is a Turkish national who was maintaining valid F-1 status as a PhD student at Tufts University," Khanbabai said in a statement. "Rumeysa was heading to meet with friends to break her Ramadan fast on the evening of March 25th when she was detained near her home in Somerville, MA by DHS agents. We are unaware of her whereabouts and have not been able to contact her" ...
