(23,156 posts)we love fat babies because it is a sign of good health.
When we were evolving, food was scarce, and plumpness was a sign of food being available. That went double for babies.
My sons were naturally skinny. They have always been the healthiest kids I've known, and they're now ages 30 and 25. The older was was especially thin as a baby, toddler, and young child. My mother was always convinced he was malnourished and had rickets. She always preferred my sister's children, who had the more natural plumpness we're programmed for.

(86,336 posts)Probably might have a puncture wound or two anyway. Must have dropped three or four feet too. Poor kid. The child had bright red hat, maybe the eagle thought it was a wounded animal or some fresh leavings from a predator..? The bird didn't spend much time observing before going in to grab it.

(86,336 posts)Takes some time to be good hunters and perhaps the fact that it wasn't moving real fast made in enticing. That was unsual though.

(16,230 posts)In the slow motion, it looks like the kid is actually lifted off the ground. Am I seeing it right?
That bird carried the child several yards away from the original point and dropped it several feet... and you can only see it clearly in slowmo. Good Grief.

(23,864 posts)...various nature shows, including (especially when they were smaller) ones about dinosaurs- and the shows would usually mention the links between dinosaurs and birds. Anyway, there's a large bluejay who loves to hang around the area, and the point hasn't been missed on my kids that if that bluejay were 10 feet tall, it'd be eating us without a second thought.
Honestly, I love the way birds look but they're nashty, nashty. Kind of like porpoises. Don't get me started.

(25,699 posts)When a bird like this comes after say, a rabbit, it does so at a strong angle with built-up, speed, tucks its wings, and basically bombs into the animal, talons-first. Imagine getting hit with a frozen turkey at 30 MPH, covered in spikes...
Looks like the bird wasn't sure what it was dealing with, and was assessing, then decided to make a grab.
Very lucky child.

Which means they may be on top of a video which has only been posted to YouTube since last night, or they are going to be "eating crow" very soon.

(135,425 posts)Good hoax, though!!!
"Both the eagle and the kid were created in 3D animation and integrated in to the film afterwards," the school, Centre NAD, said in a statement Wednesday.
As seen below, cyber sleuths and imaging experts had quickly poked holes in the viral video, spotting obvious flaws in shadows and composition.
Students at the Centre NAD have cooked up digital hoaxes in the past as part of their coursework, including this video of a penguin escaping from the Montreal Biodôme.

(45,788 posts)Looks really CGI at :46
To summarize:
- No outside news reports or verification.
- No details in the original YouTube posting beyond "Montreal," - no reaction video after the event, ends almost immediately.
- Parent has child sitting well away from him.
- Parent doesn't "flinch" as huge object moves past him, but simply turns and runs.
- Baby dropping looks really CGI in slo-mo.
- NO TALON DAMAGE???

(9,033 posts)it isn't a golden eagle. It's an osprey. Much smaller; could lift maybe 1.5 pounds.

(3,186 posts)When the S/O and friends go ice fishing, the eagles (-mostly-but some other birds too) used to steal the fish they catch. Because of this, they have learned over time to throw their catches in coolers right away. But almost every year, they will see out-of-staters who are unaware of the problem, getting their fish swiped. Sometimes the S/O will warn them, sometimes not, depending on the attitudes... Hehe
I'm glad that poor kid appears to be ok, because eagles can be very aggressive. And their talons are extremely sharp! Once, while the S/O was ice fishing with a new hat that had faux rabbit fur on it, an eagle swiped down and attempted to grab it right off his head. That could have really hurt, had he not seen it coming and smacked it away from him.
Never saw one go after a little kid until now, but eagles, owls, and other types of 'birds of prey' will often go after cats and little dogs, which is why I now have two strictly indoor kitties. I have good reason to believe some type of 'bird of prey' got my beloved cat 'Fatman' this past summer.

(50,169 posts)Child-snatching eagle video created as student project
Digital animation students created video depicting eagle grabbing toddler
Students at Montreal's 3D technology school, Centre NAD, have come forward to claim responsibility for a viral video that appears to show an eagle snatching a toddler in a Montreal park.
The video "Golden Eagle Snatches Kid in Montreal" seems to show exactly that. A large bird appears to swoop down from the sky above Mont Royal Park and pick up the child in its talons. The bird travels several metres before dropping the toddler and flying away.
The camera then zooms in on the child, who is crying but seems to be uninjured.
A statement released today said that students Normand Archambault, Loïc Mireault and Félix Marquis-Poulin created the video as a project for their 3D animation and digital design class.
