AP: Obama Not Making New Cliff Offer
The AP reported Friday afternoon that President Obama is not offering a new deal to avert the fiscal cliff during a meeting with congressional leaders at the White House. This comes in contrast to reports from Friday morning that Obama would offer up a new, scaled-back offer.
Obama instead is spelling out again a plan he says can pass the House and Senate, said the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was unauthorized to speak publicly about the private meeting.
Obama wants a bill to halt looming tax increases on all families making $250,000 a year or less and would extend unemployment insurance to many people about to lose it. His proposal would also cover other issues as the Jan. 1 deadline nears.
If he does not get a counter proposal that can pass both chambers, Obama will press for a straight up-or-down vote on his idea, the source said.

Nobody needs to get hypersensitive about that.
I'm more interested in the substance. It seems clear to me that Obama understands that Boehner can't do anything until Jan 3 and Obama is just posturing at this point to make sure the imagery doesn't make it look like Obama is the cause.
My guess is that they are trying to come up with a laundry list of points they can push on January 4. Obama will position this as a special emergency, and on that basis, Boehner will suspend the "Hastert rule" just this once, thereby bypassing the teabaggers without shoving it in their faces any more than is necessary.

(8,377 posts)Obama would rather deal with Boehner than anybody else in the House. The teabaggers don't have enough members to upend Boehner. So Obama is greasing the skids for the old boys to carry on business as usual. You and I don't mean anything to these people.

(12,482 posts)there are some pretty unhappy teabaggers.

(8,377 posts)The rest are just unprincipled cowards who are afraid of being "primaried" on their right. But they sure do want a teabagger as their leader. I think the teabaggers come up at least 20 votes short.

1. a figure of speech in which a term or phrase is applied to something to which it is not literally applicable in order to suggest a resemblance, as in A mighty fortress is our God. Compare mixed metaphor, simile ( def 1 ) .
2. something used, or regarded as being used, to represent something else; emblem; symbol.

(7,886 posts)it's like defending the republican cartoons depicting Obama as a monkey. Sure there are similarities, and bush was depicted as a chimp often enough, but there is a reason we don't tolerate it.

Lordquinton
(7,886 posts)What I wrote was a direct comparison, both are viable, and appropriate metaphors, however given historical context, they are wildly inappropriate. Do you have any counter to this? or are you going to dodge the issue again?

it needs work, to say the least. and yours wasn't a metaphore, it was a simile (regardless of its quality.)
Lordquinton
(7,886 posts)I said that both metaphors were inappropriate given the context, can't take one out of context but not another. Regardless, the issue at hand is that the President is (apparently) not letting the reps just have everything, and anything they want, I hope he takes it further than that and proposes a new deal with less concessions than the previous and loudly makes them counter it with proposals.

(19,926 posts)is the Chained CPI SS offer still in there? Is there somewhere we can see just what he's offering at this time?
I see $250,000 which I believe was from an early offer so I'm hoping he's gone back to that and taken SS off the table. Is there confirmation of this?

(103,856 posts)things like the cpi.
That's the quirky part of our system..laws are never REALLY "permanent" laws.. They can (and do) change things and make the changes retroactive if they like..
What needs to happen is for us to somehow hold onto the senate & perhaps challenge ....really challenge.. some of the odd-duck republican congresspeople..in '14.. The last 2 years of this administration could actually get something gone if that happens..
If we lose the senate and they also keep the house.. we are toasted, butter-side-down.

(7,549 posts)and they said we are likely to get just a bill on the tax issues and leave the spending cut talk until after the new Congress is seated. So does this mean the Chained CPI nonsense is at least off the table until then or is that part of the plan Obama thinks can pass Congress? I am hoping ABC is right and it is just going to be on extending the tax cuts to middle income families. Also I also hope it includes extending unemployment benefits. As far as cuts are concerned though the longer those discussions are put off the better. That way we have more time to rally against Chained CPI.
