Disgusting. Beyond the pale. Despicable.

(2,431 posts)There will never be an "appropriate" time.
Perpetual war is disgusting, beyond the pale, and despicable.

(19,178 posts)Republicans would be crying all over the media.
Democrats are weak. And let them get away with it

(29,257 posts)And that is...
That in order to defeat the Republicans, in order to start winning, the "Democratic Party" has adopted many of the same positions as the Republicans.
This can be clearly seen with regards to the increase in the hawkishness of the Democrats. The killing of OBL and any number of "Al Qaeda number twos" as well as American Al Queda, etc. --these are proudly thrown in the collective faces of the Republicans in order to show that we are not as weak as they said we were. But in doing so, we unconsciously swallowed the Republican mindset.
It is also true with regards to issues of "smaller government" and "tax cutting" as well as the rhetoric surrounding public schools "improvements", welfare and any number of issues.

(20,600 posts)then they don't have to show any respect to the office at all, and can behave like traitors. But if its a repub as president, its a whole new ball game and you are a damn traitor if you criticize the president during war.

(29,257 posts)If you had told me 3 years ago that the man I contributed time and money to would support assassinations, indefinite detention, secret trials, unwarranted wiretaps, cuts to home heating subsidies for the poor, bailouts and indemnification for huge mortgage frauds, tripling of use of unmanned drones, etc, etc. etc. -I would not have believed you OR worked for him.
If you had told me he would give up the public option before negotiations had hardly begun or that he would come out an jail and prosecute more people for petty marijuana offenses, or that college loans would become harder to get, I would not have believed you OR worked for him.
If you had told me that now Dems would be championing how strong our guy is in the "War against Terror", I would have... well you know.

(8,303 posts)Would you have wanted Obama not to be able to voice his opinions on tactics, etc, re Bush's conduct?
Should Kerry in 2004 not have been able to voice anything but support for Bush's military ventures?
What you are advocating is a recipe for perpetual war if it can be used to immunize the Executive from criticism. We need more criticism of wars, not less.

(8,556 posts)He's fair game at all times, troops in the field or not. If you didn't like the right saying this during Bush, you probably shouldn't be saying it now. I didn't think the president was off limits then and I don't think he is now either.
And I don't really criticize Obama very much. But I don't begrudge people who do. He's on top so he's going to get criticism. That's the way the game goes.
