how Thompson's own presidential campaign fired up the Conservative base, and ignited the fireworks that blazed across the GOP skies a scant few years ago.

Remember the crowds who rushed to his speeches? Remember the extra security that had to be pressed into service to keep the adoring throngs in check? Remember the record-breaking numbers of attendees at his rallies?

Yeah, me neither.
