Without these super pacs Mitt would have went on his merry way to the nomination with ease. Pumped in money gave Newt south carolina. The GOP is terrified of newt not only what a poor general election candidate he would be but also,he would cost the GOP the house and the senate.
Seems like the unlimited money they were looking for is kicking them in the teeth.

"A wealthy backer of Newt Gingrich will inject $5 million into a super PAC supporting his presidential bid, two people with knowledge of the contribution said on Monday, providing a major boost to Mr. Gingrich as he seeks to fend off aggressive attacks from Mitt Romney, his main Republican rival.
The supporter, Dr. Miriam Adelson, is the wife of Sheldon Adelson, a longtime Gingrich friend and a patron who this month contributed $5 million to the super PAC, Winning Our Future. Dr. Adelsons check will bring the couples total contributions to Winning Our Future to $10 million, a figure that could substantially neutralize the millions of dollars already being spent in Florida by Mr. Romney and Restore Our Future, a super PAC supporting him.
Mr. Adelsons initial check financed a barrage of negative ads against Mr. Romney in South Carolina, helping Mr. Gingrich to an upset victory in Saturdays Republican primary there. But those attacks, which focused on Mr. Romneys wealth and private equity career, also drew condemnation from many conservatives, who said Mr. Gingrichs allies were undercutting free-market capitalism and amplifying class-warfare arguments being made by Democrats and Occupy Wall Street demonstrators.
In making the couples second $5 million contribution, Dr. Adelson expressed a wish to Winning Our Future officials that the money be used to continue the pro-Newt message, one of the people familiar with the contribution said, rather than attack Mr. Romney.
The Adelsons contributions on Mr. Gingrichs behalf illustrate how rapidly a new era of unlimited political money is reshaping the rules of presidential politics and empowering individual donors to a degree unseen since before the Watergate scandals."

(45,358 posts)The GOP SuperPAC ads attacking Obama will be CRAZY, and I think most Americans will be sickened by them.

(3,894 posts)unbelievably weird, with Hillary going after the old, white, gun-tottin' groups, and some of that. But alas, not only did the nomination of Obama end most of the in fighting, somehow some of his worse critics ended up his best friends, seemingly.
Seems every election has some of this. And since no matter, it's all Republican or Conservative groups taking in all the money and spending it with other Republican corporations, y'know, I doubt anyone except the few true politicians (vs money whores) really care.

(10,857 posts)The first thing to notice is that the money is a lot better at tearing someone else down than lifting one's self up in the polls. This encourages all candidates (I am not even going to play this bullshit game that the candidate's backers are not actually affiliated with their candidate) to focus on negativity, and doing as much damage as possible with well-timed and concentrated commercial assaults.
The extra money has created great volatility among the candidates, which in turn is propelling the GOP toward its own worst nightmare: a multiple-ballot convention. As long as there is enough money out there, the GOP candidates are playing a giant game of whack-a-mole, with the candidate emerging on top from the last round of negative smearing against someone else instantly becoming the target for the next round of smears.
And of course, since rich people insist on a return for their investment, the money is going to see its chance for a payoff by taking this thing to a convention. I think that about three-quarters of the money will actually be maneuvering in favor of a convention decision, since that will be the best way to keep their investments viable the longest, and give them the best chance of getting their guy in via the smoky back room even if he's been crushed by others' negative advertising.
Even better, I think it's unlikely that the eventual nominee will simply be able to walk away from the damage that has already been done to him. By the time the attack ads finally focus on President Obama, I'm going to guess that around six out of ten voters will have already decided in his favor thanks to this bloodbath circus.
The President will need only offer subtle reminders of what his opponent's peers said about him, while otherwise taking the high road. I believe that may make President Obama the primary beneficiary of all this money being blown.
That couldn't make me happier.
