1. in theory maybe, but in practice..not so much

republican take overs in 2010, in multiple states guaranteed (through massive gerrymandering) that they will have a stranglehold on the house for a long time, unless dems plan on spending a LOT of money and time fielding, nurturing and backing fantastic candidates to defeat the cretins they will put forth for elections.

the battle for control STARTS in the statehouses and state legislatures.

Winning the white house is not the way to change things, since it's only 1/4 of the solution..

house
senate
SCOTUS
president

The presidency has the prestige, but unless there is cohesion in the other branches, the president accomplishes little...and any ONE of the others can block/undo anything he /she does accomplish..

2. According to Norman Goldman, states can be redistricted midway between censuses

The Supreme Court ruled in 2006 that states can be redistricted even midway between censuses. Check out United Latin American Citizens v. Perry

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/League_of_United_Latin_American_Citizens_v._Perry

From Wikipedia:

"The US Supreme Court issued an opinion on the case in League of United Latin American Citizens v. Perry on June 28, 2006. While the Court said states are free to redistrict as often as desired, the justices ruled that Texas's 23rd congressional district was invalid, as it violated Section 2 of the 1965 Voting Rights Act. This decision required lawmakers to adjust boundaries in line with the Court's ruling.[3]"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2003_Texas_redistricting#2006_Supreme_Court_review

Thus, it only takes Democrats to be able to retake the state legislatures and governor seats in order to redistrict the states.

3. Unfortunately the party is still breathing. And all their idiot followers continue to be idiots.

Their think tanks continue to scheme and send out propaganda to their faithful. Just saw a letter the other day from the Independence Institute (John Caldera in Colorado) in which he assesses "what went wrong" and what they want to do about it. It's all really quite pathetic but a stark reminder that these assholes will never stop trying to get control. They do not care about the consequences of conservative policies on the great majority of people. They do not have or ever will have the country's best interest at heart. They will continue to scheme against us by aligning themselves with greedy, selfish people and we must never forget that.

Let's not dance on the grave of their vile, regressive party just yet.

it's bullshit. In 2014 there are few vulnerable Repub Senate seats up and many vulnerable Dem seats up. That combined by years of gerrymandering House districts, makes it likely that the Repubs will make gains in both bodies.

5. They said the same thing in 2012

We were supposed to lose the Senate, fall farther behind in the House and lose the presidency. Instead we kept the White House and made gains in both houses of Congress.

The biggest problem the Rs have is the 2010 election. They went out and claimed they'd fix everything. They'd make the crops grow again. They'd fix the dust storms and the economy too. They'd also cure athlete's foot and carsickness...all in one week. Once elected they started working on getting rid of the president.

If they cannot figure out any way to create jobs that doesn't involve giving tax cuts, the streets will be filled with teabagger cadavers.

and we can't always expect the same kind of lucky breaks we got in 2012. Not to mention that you're rewriting history with your claim that we were supposed to lose the Presidency and fall further behind in the House.

Look, most teabaggers in the House are safe. Look at their districts. In fact, they stand a greater chance of losing their seats, in most cases, if they compromise with dems than if they don't.

This claim that the repub party is dead gets endlessly repeated here. Has for all the time I've been here. It's bullshit. And it's not very bright bullshit when there's only two parties.

the rethugs. ONLY one. It's their patience. They plot and plan years in advance and never give up. We Dems don't so much. I've been saying this about the "Hillary's our [only] 2016 candidate" focus since the meme began, even though she consistently said she wouldn't run and even though she'll be 69 and probably grateful to be out of the fray. This is one area we need to be like the rethugs and start right now to plan and groom strong, viable, compelling candidates for 2014 and 2016.

But it's something they must do for without the Republicans to constantly blame the Democrats will have to deliver a more progressive and liberal society.

Unfortunately FOX news is still on the air. This propaganda machine still has nearly as much impact as it did pre-meltdown. It has defined the echo chamber universe of outright lies presented as established fact and continues to do so.

While the monstrosity that is the modern GOP still breathes, Karl and his enablers still plot mayhem with malice, it is the Faux network that gives them public voice and influence they badly need. Unplug FOX and they lose the echo which drives the House and Senate fear machine. Better yet arrest Roger Alies and Rupert Murdoch for Treason and Slander.

And still stick around. 2014 isn't going to be the sweep we want either, especially without the President on the ticket.

From the Republicans standpoint, they better start obstructing and battling the Democrats and the President at every turn the next two years or their base isn't gonna come out for the midterms and/or primary any compromisers.

12. no they live because of gerrymandering
Tue Jan 1, 2013, 10:55 AM

Ohio went strong for Brown statewide in the Senate race, Obama
won Ohio comfortably, we have more Ds then Rs, but through
gerrymandering only 4 of the 16 House races went to Ds. Time and
demographics are against the Rs but money, media control, and
ruthless use of power both legally and illegally will keep the Rs
in the mix for a long time.
