the folks who lose their unemployment compensation, the seniors whose doctors tell them that they're cutting them off, and the people who see their paychecks hit with a double whammy of FICA tax holiday expiration and Federal income tax raises. The President made some intelligent (if painful) compromises with the Senate to get near unanimity on a vote, it's possible that he expects to do some further compromising with a House that is still not within the control of his party.

And efforts should be underway to convince 20-30 Republicans to quit the party and caucus for the Democrats, instead.

Win-win here, and Republicans will be on their way to an extreme minority status.

The point is to force the Democrats to give them further concessions AFTER Democrats offered them their best and final deal. They are more intent on winning further concessions at this stage than they are on any concession in particular. They are probing for Democratic weak points.

...the Senate should re-convene, amend the bill themselves to take out the cuts, PLUS drop the tax cut limit from $400k back to $250k, raise the debt ceiling for two years, reinstitute the payroll tax cut, and send it back to the Clown Chamber...I mean the House.
