How Many People Have Been Killed by Guns Since Newtown? 387 Excellent> (interactive map)

Since the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn., on Dec. 14, we at Slate have been wondering how many people are dying from guns in America every day.

That information is surprisingly hard to come by. The Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence, for example, has a tally atop its website of “people shot in America.” That number, though, is an estimate, based on the number of gun injuries and deaths recorded by the CDC in 2008 and 2009, the most recent years for which statistics are available. It seems shocking that when guns are in the headlines every day, there’s no one attempting to create a real-time chronicle of the deaths attributable to guns in the United States.

I posted this the other day, it didn't get any attention. Figured DU was no longer interested, can see now some still are.

I didn't expect the vast majority of those killed to be adult men. I guess I shouldn't be surprised as adult men are around guns much more than women. And children are around guns even less, which is a good thing, yet far too many die accidentally.

are the penalties greater for negligence in gun deaths etc? There have got to be regulations reinforcing "enlightened" legislation I would think...yes I see CA has the best gun laws in the nations--and one of the lowest rates of gun death relative to population.

Here's some info on it from a recent article: ------------------------------------------------------

"California goes beyond federal law in requiring background checks on individuals who try to buy firearms at gun shops and gun shows. It also requires a 10-day waiting period for handgun and rifle purchases.

The state has approved 45 gun-control laws since 1989, when the state became the first in the nation to ban military-style assault weapons after the slaying of five children and wounding of 29 others in a Stockton schoolyard.

Yee plans to push another bill to require yearly registration and background checks for gun ownership.

Another bill, by Sen. Kevin DeLeon, D-Los Angeles, would require a background check and permit — with annual updates -- for anyone wishing to buy ammunition.

"For the sake of our children and the memory of the victims of the Sandy Hook massacre, it's time for an honest and rational debate on gun control and how to keep ammunition out of the hands of criminals," De Leon said."

what the motive of a gun death is? Is it possible that without access to a gun there would be fewer suicides? Suicide by gun is almost always successful -- other methods, not so much.

If there is a gun in the house, chances of a homicide, OR a suicide are increased significantly. Access to a gun is detrimental to everyone's health, and they should be treated as such.

here's Fields take on the pecking order...

"Field, last night you blogged about a "pecking order" when it comes to American lives; please tell us what you think the pecking order is from top to bottom."

I am always glad to oblige someone who reads the field's blog and takes the time to send an e-mail.

1. White women.

2. White children.

3. White men.

4. Others. (Hispanics,Asians, etc.)

5. Black children.

6. Black women.

7. Pets.

8. Black men.

You are welcome.

I very much appreciate another perspective. I was thinking about that list, and the correlation with news reports. I think he gets pretty close.

I was toying with the thought that such a "pecking order" seems downright unfair, and that if we could fix it so that everyone got equal concern, we might do away with a lot of the violence, gun and otherwise. Maybe more than just hiding some guns and extra clips away from a large number of people. It's more effort, but for our return on investment it might be better.

Deputies Surround Shooting Suspect In Wimberley

Deputies with the Hays County Sheriff's Office say they've surrounded a shooting suspect at a home near Wimberley High School.

Deputies say that at around noon they responded to a shooting call at a home in the 300 block of Rader Ranch Road, in a neighborhood directly behind Wimberley High School.

The victim has been taken to a hospital in Austin -- her/his status is unknown. The shooter is barricaded in a residence, according to deputies.

Due to the proximity of the incident and Wimberley High School, the school was put on lockdown. The children and all staff members that were in the school are safe, according to deputies.

We have a crew on the way to the scene and we will update this story as we learn more.
