The Republican Party has become a party of registered extremists. Therefore they will choose the candidate who best represents an extremist worldview, can verbally assault Obama and appeals to the built-in bigotry of the Party - that being Newt Gingrich.

(27,787 posts)get behind Mitt and starts to mobilize a serious ground game after Florida ... I can see them hitting the caucus states hard, and I think it will be tough for Gingrich on March 6th because he can't be in all of those states at the same time. Mitt and his PACs will have the money to get out the vote in all of them ... I don't think Gingrich will have the money to really cover them all.
But, we can hope that Newt wins ... that would be awesome!!

(2,830 posts)Arrogant, narcissistic, and deeply flawed on many levels. A former Speaker of the House sanctioned for ethics violations by his own party, a lobbyist for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac during the height of the housing crisis AND Mr. "I divorce sick wives."
If President Obama can't win against a douchebag like Newt, then he doesn't deserve a second-term, PERIOD!.

(1,546 posts)to be a serious candidate. His "candidacy" like Cain's appeared to be about raising his brand profile for the sake of book sales, speaking engagements, and the other money-making scams he runs. It took a while for the dopes in the Republican base to weed-out the bozos (Bachmann, Cain, Perry), but he and Romney are the only thing approaching nominee material. The GOP is in pathetic shape on the national level. I think Newt's only real shot is if Romney's tax, Bain, Cayman Islands problems gain enough traction to threaten his case for viability.

(20,226 posts)considering Intrade is now rating a 26.5% chance that there will be military strikes against Iran by the end of 2012 - that is pretty high odds.

This is scary because increased tension with Iran would mean oil prices climbing up to $150 to $200 per barrel even if fighting doesn't actually break out -- this coupled with the latest negative forecast from the IMF would of course mean that the economy would melt down and go into free fall - thus setting the stage for a catastrophe in the election this November. This isn't necessarily the likely outcome - but it is plausible and it does set a scenario whereby the unthinkable prospects of a President Gingrich could happen. I don't think it will. But it is by no means impossible.

(276 posts)2nd rights and I am not witch were the tea party favorites and they won their primaries. The GOP establishment was dead set against these two but the more they complained the more support they got from the tea party morans. And I suspect this will also apply to Newt. Thank you Koch brothers, Fox news, for making Barney Franks retirement gift. LOL
