from the Guardian UK, via AlterNet:
A Connecticut community is to hold an amnesty of violent video gamesin the wake of last month's mass shooting in Newtown.
Organisers Southington SOS plan to offer gift certificates in exchange for donated games, which will be burned. The group, a coalition of local organisations, says its actions do not assert that video games were the cause of the killings in nearby Newtown, but argues that violent games and films desensitize children to "acts of violence".
Pupils from Sandy Hook elementary school, where 26 people were killed on 17 December, returned to classes for the first time on Thursday in the neighbouring town of Monroe. Sandy Hook elementary is still being treated as a crime scene and it is unclear if it will ever reopen.
The video game amnesty will take place on 12 January in Southington, a 30-minute drive east from Newtown. The town of Southington has provided a dumpster, organisers said, where violent video games, CDs or DVDs will be collected. ...............(more)

(12,041 posts)I think they are focusing on the wrong culprit, but I am all for free speech so they can protest games all they want they just should respect our environment when they do it. Burning games is not environmentally friendly, we don't need toxins polluting our air. Crush them if it really makes you feel better, but burning plastic and silicon is just stupid.

(38,187 posts)especially if they burn a lot of games. They'll end up with health problems down the road if they stand too near those games while they burn them. It's just stupid. I agree with the crushing idea if they must do something as stupid as that. We have enough troubles with the environment now.

That is exactly how predictable many in this country really are, sadly.

(19,841 posts)which you can understand from a tortured community. They have no control over the gun lobby and the firearms manufacturers.
If you had experienced this massacre at close range and if you have ANY empathy whatsoever, wouldn't it feel a little weird to be playing these games after this? Or letting kids play them? Tilt?
There IS a reason why the US Army uses violent videos to train the army to kill people (Yes, killing people IS their job, but they have to be trained to do it.) We should raise our kids on First Person Shooter games?

From the article:
The press release accompanying the announcement said that Southington SOS's action should NOT be "construed as a statement declaring that violent video games were the cause of the shocking violence in Newtown on December 14".
"Rather, Southington SOS is saying is that there is ample evidence that violent video games, along with violent media of all kinds, including TV and movies portraying story after story showing a continuous stream of violence and killing, has contributed to increasing aggressiveness, fear, anxiety and is desensitizing our children to acts of violence including bullying.
"Social and political commentators, as well as elected officials including the president, are attributing violent crime to many factors including inadequate gun control laws, a culture of violence and a recreational culture of violence."

(18,402 posts)They're trying to make a statement about changing attitudes about children's entertainment consisting of violent games. It may be stupid (or not), but they're perfectly within their rights to make this symbolic gesture. It's not censorship, and the idea that this is like book burning doesn't comport with the facts of the story.
This whole video game thing is difficult. I can't say I have any experience with it. My kids played video games, but they purposefully (without any need for us to ever make any rules about it) rejected anything with violence. They wouldn't even watch anything on tv that was violent. If it came on, they'd change the channel. Games, and tv, have gotten a lot more violent since that time. I think it disturbs some kids more than people may think.
